Mexico dropped to 0-2-0 in the U-20 World Cup following a dispirited loss to its South American foe.
Mexico dropped its second straight game at the U-20 World Cup in Turkey, falling 1-0 to Paraguay Tuesday. Derlis Gonzalez's goal in the 52nd minute was all Paraguay needed to take the result in Gazientep. The loss, coupled with Saturday's 2-1 loss to Greece, keeps Mexico rooted to the bottom of the Group D standings with no points ahead of the group finale against Mali.
Jorge Espericueta, who scored Mexico's goal against Greece, nearly matched his effort off a second-half stoppage-time free kick that would have leveled the score. His 20-yard, left-footed effort struck the crossbar with Paraguay goalkeeper Diego Morel anchored to the ground, though, and Paraguay saw off the contest.
Mexico is not eliminated yet, as the top four third-place finishers advance to the knockout round, but Sergio Almaguer's side will need a victory over Mali and outside assistance if it is to make sure that its venture to Turkey does not end prematurely.
