Voted for by editors from Goal’s 35 editions representing more than 600 journalists, the Goal 50 provides an unparalleled insight into the highest achievers in all positions and across all continents, and unearths many of the future stars of the game.

Graham Shaw, Goal’s Editorial Director, said: "Goal 50 gives a truly global view on the players who have lit up an epic season. The World Cup in Brazil was a fitting finale to a sensational campaign, and added fuel to the debate raging about who should top this year’s list."

Messi, after last year's triumph, said: "I'm very excited about this. As players, we work the entire year to win honors for the team, we don't look for the individual awards, but when they come it's an incentive and gives us strength to continue on the same path."

We will be leading up to the award with a look back through previous winners, fans' votes of the best players of the season, best XIs and much more.
