The former Chelsea midfielder has agreed to join newly founded MLS team New York City FC following his departure from Stamford Bridge, but the expansion team's season will not begin until March 2015.

And now the 36-year-old is poised to link up with the Premier League champion, which shares ownership of the American franchise with the New York Yankees baseball club, as he looks to maintain his fitness.

Lampard is likely to remain at the Etihad Stadium until mid-January, and Goal UK reports City plans to register the midfielder for its Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

The England international scored 211 goals for Chelsea in 649 matches and is believed to be hopeful he can avoid a potential match-up against his former employers. City faces the Blues at the Etihad Stadium on September 21.

Lampard won three Premier League titles during his time at Stamford Bridge and is looking forward to linking up with New York.

Upon completing his move, he told reporters: “New York ticks all the right boxes for me. It's very exciting.”

He will join David Villa among others at the MLS franchise, and the Spain international has also made a short-term move ahead of his move, joining Melbourne City on a three-month deal.
