In Monday night’s draw in Miami, the Impact learned the identity of their adversaries for the first round of the CONCACAF Champions League
The San Jose Earthquakes and the eventual winners of the Clausura in Guatemala await the Montreal Impact this fall in the CONCACAF Champions’ League group stage.
In order to qualify for the knockout stages, only a first place finish in the round-robin phase will suffice for the Impact, but despite the small margin for error, sporting director Nick De Santis explained that he’s confident his side will be able to finish on top.
“We feel good about the draw,” De Santis stated. “We’ve played San Jose before and done well against them at home and on the road. We know we’ll play one of the better Guatemalan teams on a difficult trip, but with all the experience on our team, we know we can be successful."
This will be the Impact’s second appearance in the tournament after qualifying for the 2008-09 edition, where the Impact lost 5-4 on aggregate in the quarterfinals to Santos Laguna.
