The Spain goalkeeper helped his side retain the European Championship with victory over Italy in Kiev and set an incredible new record in the process.

Iker Casillas has become the first player in the history of international football to win 100 matches for his country following Spain's 2-0 win over Italy in the final of Euro 2012 on Sunday.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper, making his 137th appearance for La Roja, also broke Dino Zoff's European Championship record of 494 minutes without conceding, setting a new record of 511 minutes without being beaten as Spain retained its continental crown thanks to goals from David Silva and Jordi Alba.

Earlier in 2012, Casillas surpassed the mark for all-time Spain appearances held by former Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta (126), and the Madrid skipper - who is still only 31 - has now made it to 100 wins.

Casillas is the first player to reach three figures in international victories, with Egypt's 37-year-old midfielder Ahmed Hassam still theoretically in with a chance of surpassing a century in the twilight of his career.

He is on 94 wins, alongside former France defender Lilian Thuram, a winner at the 1998 World Cup and again at Euro 2000, while former Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohamed Ali Deayea and Iran's legendary striker Ali Daei are both on 89 successes.

Germany great Lothar Matthaus, who featured 150 times for his country, is close behind with 87 wins overall.

Casillas has captained his side to an unprecedented third straight success at international level, having led La Roja to glory at Euro 2008 and again at the World Cup in South Africa two years ago.
