Following the goalless draw against the Gunners that pushes Aston Villa out of the relegation zone, the Scottish manager has praised his young side's performance

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has hailed his side's "terrific" effort after a hard-fought goalless draw against Arsenal.

An energetic performance from his young team ensured that it picked up its first point in three games, a result that also means that it moves out of the relegation zone, leapfrogging Reading.

Having conceded eight in the previous two games, the 43-year-old Scot was particularly pleased with the clean sheet.

"You look at the average age of the back four towards the end there, I thought they were excellent," Lambert told ESPN. "I thought we really played well in certain spells of the game and we had some decent chances. But their effort, I thought, was terrific against a good Arsenal side."

After successive games against the Manchester clubs and Arsenal, Lambert is priming his side for a different type of challenge with Reading, QPR and Stoke to come.

"We've had a really tough three games and we've come through them with a high performance level we can be happy with," the ex-Norwich City boss continued.

"[The games coming are] totally different. But the good thing is these lads will go into these games with confidence and if they do that and keep playing the way they're playing, they'll be fine."
