Manchester United manager states that the center-back has filled in admirably in the absence of Nemanja Vidic, and has formed a good partnership in defense with Rio FerdinandManchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that Jonny Evans is "arguably the best defender in the country" after filling in admirably for the injured Nemanja Vidic.
Evans had a shaky start to the season following his red card in the infamous 6-1 defeat at home to Manchester City.
Following Vidic's season-ending injury, Evans has formed a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand and earned rave reviews in recent months.
"I must admit my heart sank a little when I learned just how long Nemanja Vidic was going to be out," Sir Alex wrote said in United Review. "He and Rio Ferdinand had become the cornerstone of our defence but Rio responded brilliantly, despite his back problem, and has now struck up a fine partnership with Jonny Evans."
Ferguson went on to detail how Evans' journey to the club's starting center back came to be.
"Jonny came to us from Belfast when he was 12 or 13, always exceptionally talented but gangly with physical issues growing up. We had him out on loan with Antwerp and Sunderland and now we are seeing the value of nurturing him.
"There is no doubt he has been helped playing alongside the experience of Rio and he is now arguably the best defender in the country."
