The MLS Rookie of the Year will join his Chicago Fire teammate to train with the in-form La Liga side and reigning UEFA Europa League champions.
The Chicago Fire's newly crowned MLS Rookie of the Year will train with Spanish power Atletico Madrid from Nov. 25 to Dec. 9 as he looks to remain fresh during the MLS offseason. The center back will join fellow Fire back line teammate Jalil Anibaba, who is currently training with the reigning UEFA Europa League champions and will be until Dec. 2.
“Austin has had a very productive first season, and this trip allows him to continue to train and develop as we build toward the 2013 season," Fire head coach Frank Klopas said in a team release.
Berry outlasted former University of Louisville teammate and D.C. United winger Nick DeLeon and Vancouver Whitecaps forward Darren Mattocks to win the league's Rookie of the Year honors. He played every minute of the 28 matches in which he featured, scoring three goals and seizing a starting role for a Fire team that returned to the MLS playoffs for the first time since 2009.
