Ben Olsen's men capped off a 4-0-0 month of July with a comprehensive win over Toronto FC at RFK Stadium.

WASHINGTON — D.C. United capped off a perfect month of July with a 3-0 win against Toronto FC on Wednesday night, further solidifying the Black-and-Red’s status as one of the league’s elite teams.

“It was a great month for us, we just have to keep this thing rolling,” midfielder Perry Kitchen told the media after the game.

In what has become one of Major League Soccer’s all-time great turnarounds, United finds itself with an 11-5-4 record, one year after winning just three games the entire season.

On Wednesday, DCU turned in one of its most complete performances of the season, riding goals from Eddie Johnson, Chris Rolfe and an own goal to a comprehensive win over the Eastern Conference’s third place team.

“We talked about that all week, how can we now start to separate ourselves and keep moving forward and tonight was a big step there,” coach Ben Olsen said in his post game press conference.

With the win, United put itself in a tremendous spot for the postseason: one point behind first place Sporting Kansas City with a game in hand, and 11 points ahead of third-place Toronto FC.

Johnson continued his uptick in form, scoring for the third straight game with a header off an assist by the impressive Kitchen.

“As he’s scored some goals, you can just see his energy level rise,” Olsen said. “That’s how goal-scorers are, they start to score and they want more.”

The goals have been a more recent development, but one facet of Johnson’s game has been present for DCU all season.

“Take the goals away, the way he occupies center backs and holds the ball for us and allows us to change the point of attack is crucial,” Olsen noted.

Though 2014 has already been a huge success, with the MLS homestretch and CONCACAF Champions League play to come, Olsen knows it could only be the beginning.

“These guys will move on,” Olsen said. “I think they’re on a mission, they want to do some special things.”
