The 31-year-old midfielder said he likely can't see himself playing in the 2018 World Cup and that he's not guaranteed a spot in this summer's tournament.

This summer's World Cup will likely be the last for U.S. national team star Landon Donovan.

The 31-year-old midfielder said he can't see himself playing in another another World Cup after this summer's competition in Brazil. He will be 36 once the 2018 World Cup in Russia rolls around.

"It's hard for me to imagine, sitting here, that I'll be able to walk in four years, much less play soccer," Donovan told ESPNFC on Monday. "So I would guess that this is my last chance of making a World Cup."

The 2014 World Cup will be the fourth for Donovan, who is widely considered one of the greatest players in U.S. soccer history.

Last year, Donovan took a short break away from the game and was not called up for qualifiers in early 2013. Although it's almost a guarantee that he'll make the World Cup roster, the LA Galaxy man insists it will be tough to earn a spot with such a deep player pool.

"Personally, I realize very clearly the competition involved," he said. "More likely than not I will be used as a midfielder in some way, and there's a lot of midfielders pushing for a few spots in the wide positions."
