Despite a less-than-inspiring final two months of the regular season, the Impact benefited from a New York victory to grab the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

After a gut-wrenching loss at Toronto FC on Saturday, the Impact had to hope that other results went their way on Sunday in order for them to book their place in the postseason in their second year as an MLS club. Montreal needed one of Houston or New England to lose on the road on Sunday, but both of those clubs emerged victorious, setting up a nail-biting scenario where Chicago had to lose at New York for the Impact to advance.
New York withstood an early Mike Magee goal to claim a 5-2 comeback victory, which ensured a first-ever Supporters' Shield for the Red Bulls and a berth in the postseason for Montreal.
As the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, the Impact will now travel to Houston to face the Dynamo in a one-game play-in match to determine a qualifier for the conference semifinal against the Red Bulls. The play-in match is scheduled for Oct. 31.
