The Rapids announced that eight players will not be returning for the 2013 season, with former U.S. international Casey the most notable departure.
The froward, who grew up in the Denver area, scored 50 goals in 101 appearances for the Rapids and played 20 times for the U.S. national team, scoring both of his senior international goals in a World Cup qualifier against Honduras in 2009 to seal passage for the USA to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
In 2010, Casey set a franchise record with 16 goals in a single season, helping lead the club to the 2010 MLS Cup, where he was named MVP.
In addition to Casey, Edu, Ian Joyce, Tyrone Marshall, Joseph Nane, Scott Palguta, Tyson Wahl and Luis Zapata have all had their options declined or will not be offered new contracts by Colorado.
