The Vancouver Whitecaps captain will face Chelsea on July 25 at PPL Park as part of the MLS All-Star squad. The defender has been in fine form, helping his club keep nine shutouts.

VANCOUVER – The fans have spoken.

Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit has been named to the fans First XI for the 2012 MLS All-Star match against European champion Chelsea on July 25 at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.
While the league describes the selection as a “First XI,” the head coach for this match, D.C. United boss Ben Olsen, will have the final say over team selection.

DeMerit has helped the high-flying Whitecaps to a league-leading nine shutouts this season, and the team currently sits tied in third place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 8-4-6.

The skipper has figured in all but one match this season, and is 141 minutes away from equaling his total time played in 2011, in what was a campaign largely ruined by recurring groin and adductor injuries.

In addition to the fans first XI, MLS commissioner Don Garber will select two players for the 32-man squad, and the remaining players will be selected via player voting.
