Canada overcame a stout North Korean side to advance to the last eight of the World Cup.
Anything less than a win would have seen Canada eliminated from the tournament, as Ghana managed to come from behind to beat Finland 2-1 in the other game in Group A.
“We didn’t want to let someone else decide our fate,” head coach Andrew Olivieri said after the game. “We had destiny in our own hands: we knew a win would guarantee us a place in the quarterfinals, and I’m really proud of the girls for the way they played.”
Defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named player of the game for her strong display which helped Canada keep a clean sheet. The 18-year-old explained she wouldn’t be satisfied with just being able to participate in the knockout phase.
“I’m very happy that we’ve won and that we’re off to the quarter-finals, but it doesn’t end here,” Buchanan said. “Tomorrow we’ll look to the next task.”
Canada will face Germany in Edmonton on Saturday.
