Altidore's early goal helped the Eredivisie side fight off a second-half comeback from Eerste Divisie side FC Dordrecht and advance.U.S. international striker Jozy Altidore scored his third goal in four days as AZ Alkmaar topped FC Dordrecht 4-2 in the KNVB Beker to move on to the competition's quarterfinal stage.
Dirk Marcellis opened the scoring for the Cheese Farmers in the 17th minute, with American star Altidore netting a few minutes later, taking a long pass out of defense from Viktor Elm and beating two defenders before slotting in the far corner with his left foot.
Elm then made it three before the half hour was up to have the visitors cruising. Dordrecht fought back in the second half with Moussa Kalisse on target and Lars Veldwijk striking home a penalty for the Schapenkoppen before Ruud Boymans sealed the deal in the 90th with AZ's fourth.
For Altidore, the goal came on the heels of a brace in league play over the weekend in a victory that snapped AZ's six-game winless streak. It was his 15th goal in all competitions this season.
Elsewhere in cup play around Europe, U.S. midfielder Jermaine Jones played a full 90 minutes in Schalke's 2-1 loss to Mainz in the last 16 of the DFB Pokal, picking up a yellow card. Due to four-game league ban, Jones will not be eligible for the German Bundesliga side again until Feb. 9.
