Kenny Miller and Darren Mattocks scored to propel Vancouver toward its first-ever Cascadia win.Prior to Saturday's late night match, the Vancouver Whitecaps had lost seven and drawn five in MLS matches against Pacific Northwest rivals the Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers. Thanks to a 2-0 win over Seattle in B.C. Place on Saturday, the Whitecaps finally triumphed in a Cascadia match.
In the opening five minutes, when Corey Hertzog won the ball back in midfield, Kenny Miller burst forward. Hertzog chipped the defense to match Miller's run. The Scot cut back, leaving Jhon Kennedy Hurtado sprawling the wrong direction, and paced a shot into the bottom corner for the opening goal.
Brad Knighton pulled off a series of saves in the first half, including an impressive double stop on Eddie Johnson and Obafemi Martins. The signing of Danish goalkeeper David Ousted appears to have spurred Knighton on, with the goalie making a career-high seven saves. But he got some help from the upright when Brad Rusin karate kicked a Lamar Neagle cross into the near post in the second half.
In the 76th minute, Darren Mattocks entered the match for Camilo Sanvezzo. In the 79th minute, Mattocks scored. Gershon Koffie, facing his own goal, headed a booted Knighton clearance backward toward the Seattle goal. Mattocks shoulded the ball past Djimi Traore and lifted the ball over Michael Gspurning.
