Vancouver Whitecaps 4-1 New York Red Bulls: Robinson off the mark with a win

A brace from Kenny Miller and a goal each from a pair of Uruguayan new boys gave the new boss a great start to his managerial career.

The Vancouver Whitecaps gave new head coach Carl Robinson a dream start to his head coaching career and the 2014 season with an emphatic 4-1 win over the reigning Supporters' Shield holders, the New York Red Bulls.

Vancouver was awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute, when a shot by new signing Matias Laba was diverted by the arm of new Red Bulls defender Richard Eckersley inside the box. Kenny Miller slotted home to give the Canadians the advantage.

The Whitecaps went up 2-0 early in the second half. Miller found Darren Mattocks on the counter, and his pass to Sebastien Fernandez allowed the Uruguayan to tee up and rip a shot from outside the area and past Luis Robles.

Miller killed the game off in the 78th minute, latching on to an excellent long pass from debutant sub Pedro Morales and lobbing Robles for his brace. The designated player grabbed one of his own in the 89th minute to make it 4-0, one-timing a Nigel Reo-Coker comeback to ensure a dream debut.

The Red Bulls' lone consolation came in stoppage time. Vancouver keeper David Ousted's halfhearted attack on the ball allowed Bradley Wright-Phillips to head in Llord Sam's cross.
