Toronto FC 1-0 San Jose Earthquakes: Defoe PK seals TFC victory

USA Today / Action

TFC edged the 'Quakes after a dominant first-half performance in each team's final match prior to the World Cup break.

Toronto FC rode a dominant first half and a spot kick by Jermain Defoe to defeat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon.

TFC started the game on the front foot, pressing all over the field and keeping the Earthquakes from maintaining possession. The home side's pressure would result in several early chances, with Defoe, Luke Moore, and right back Nick Hagglund all stinging the palms of San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.

Defoe would eventually open the scoring in the 27th minute, after TFC defender was taken down in the San Jose box by Alan Gordon. The English designated player stepped up to the spot and powered home the penalty kick, giving Toronto a deserved 1-0 lead.

Despite the one-way traffic for most of the first half, the lead remained at just one for TFC at the halftime break. Toronto finished the opening 45 minutes with the advantage in shots and possession, but the second half would be a bit more positive for San Jose as the Earthquakes finally registered their first shots on target.

The 'Quakes were arguably the better side in the second half, but TFC's team defence did what it needed to to hold on to the victory.

The win puts Toronto at 6-4-1 through its first 11 games of the season, while San Jose falls to 4-5-4.
