Swansea City win Aggregate 2 - 0

Live Commentary

  • Chelsea struggled to break through Swansea's solid defence, creating few clear-cut chances, and never really pushed forward with the attacking intent they needed. Mata was a lone bright spark, but the tie was effectively over when Hazard was sent off for kicking the ballboy. The incident shouldn't overshadow a superb display from Laudrup's side over two legs though, and they will now face Bradford in the final - the magic of the Capital One Cup continues.
  • Williams was a powerful, immovable presence in defence and his performance typified the robustness of Swansea tonight. The Swans defended very well, aided by some calm goalkeeping by Tremmel. They could have scored a number of goals on the break, but in the end it didn't matter.
  • FULL-TIME!! That's it, it's all over, Swansea are in the Capital One Cup final. The Welsh side were superb and thoroughly deserve their trip to Wembley. Chelsea huffed and puffed but created relatively little, and Hazard's sending off will no doubt dominate tomorrow's headlines.
  • 90' + 6'
Michu slides a pass behind Cahill for Hernandez, but Cech rushes from his line and claims the ball. Surely there's no way back for Chelsea now.
  • 90' + 5'
Swansea are calmly passing the ball around, methodically retaining possession. Hernandez at last pushes forward and feeds Dyer, who fizzes a shot towards the top corner that has to be tipped behind by Cech. Good shot, good save.
  • 90' + 3'
Swansea surge forward again and Ki picks out Dyer inside the box, but Chelsea manage clear. The Blues have struggled to leave their own half since Hazard was sent off.
  • 90' + 1'
There will be six minutes of added time.
  • 89'
Big chance for Swansea. Ki has loads of space down the left, this is the chance to guarantee Swansea's place in the final. The South Korean is inside the box, takes a touch, but then inexplicably tries to cut back inside and Chelsea are able to clear. Could that come back to haunt the Swans? Probably not.
  • 87'
There are chants of "Ole!" as Swansea knock the ball around. But the match isn't won yet. Chelsea steal possession and Mata bursts down the right before finding Ba with a deep cross. The striker squares the ball for Luiz who is about to release a shot until Williams - yet again - makes an important interception.
  • 86'
    Substitution Ashley Cole Ryan Bertrand
  • 85'
It looks like a mammoth task for Chelsea at this point. Swansea are keeping the ball well and giving the Blues little chance to mount an attack.
  • 83'
Swansea are on top now, making full use of their man advantage. Ki strolls forward and feeds Hernandez down the left, who tries to pass the ball into the far corner but Cech makes the save. Dyer was in acres of space if he'd only spotted him.
  • 81'
    Substitution Oscar Fernando Torres
  • 80'
    Red Card Eden Hazard
  • 78'
It's just not clicking for Chelsea. A pass to Azpilicueta is overplayed and goes out for a goal kick. But there's huge drama! Hazard tries to hurry up the game and collect the ball off the ballboy, but the youngester ends up in a heap on the floor. Replays show that Hazard kicked him the ribs.
  • 76'
De Guzman races to close down Cech, and the goalkeeper looks a little bit vulnerable before offloading to Cahill. Torres is getting ready to come on.
  • 74'
Oscar sends an inswinging cross into the box and Tremmel comes a long way to claim the ball. Good goalkeeping from the German, and Swansea get a chance to breathe.
  • 73'
Chelsea are starting to exert a lot of pressure now. Azpilicueta fires a cross into the box, which bounces around the area, but Williams is on hand to clear the ball. Chelsea recover possession and Mata advances forward. the Spaniard fires a shot, right-footed, towards the bottom corner which Tremmel saves well.
  • 71'
Oscar dribbles forward and crosses, but Chico clears. Swansea break, with Davies jinking past Azpilicueta. The full-back floats in a cross, which is cleared easily, but Michu takes a tumble and the home crowd cry foul play. The referee is having none of it.
  • 69'
Benitez has made his first change, but it's not Torres. David Luiz replaces Ivanovic, who has needlessly gifted possession to Swansea on several occasions. Luiz is considerably more cultured on the ball.
  • 68'
    Substitution Branislav Ivanovic David Luiz
  • 68'
Hazard plays a cute one-two with Lampard, but his pull-back is cleared for a corner. Michu rises highest to clear the resulting set-piece.
  • 66'
Swansea have the ball on the edge of Chelsea's box with Hernandez. The Spaniard tries to dribble through Ivanovic, but loses the ball. Ki recovers possession, but the Swans are thwarted once more as Ramires makes a clearance.
  • 65'
    Substitution Wayne Routledge Nathan Dyer
  • 64'
Michu is cutting an increasingly isolated figure up front. A scrappy phase of play sees Rangel venture up the pitch, though his eventual cross is wildly overhit and goes out for a throw-in on the opposite flank.
  • 62'
Lampard tries a shot from 30-yards that is so high and wide it's probably entering orbit right now. Chelsea are beginning to look a little desperate.
  • 60'
Britton is on the deck and receiving treatment. The little midfielder took an elbow to the face from Ramires, though it was accidental.
  • 58'
Cole embarks on a mazy run into the box before clipping a cross towards the back post. It's cleared as far as Mata, whose vicious volley is blocked into the path of Ramires, who attempts to strike the ball first time but drags his shot well wide.
  • 57'
Rangel bursts forward and feeds Hernandez. Swansea have numbers in the box, but the Spanish winger's cross is easily headed clear by Ivanovic.
  • 55'
Chelsea are still patiently probing the Swansea defence, yet to really push forward in numbers. Will Benitez bring on Torres in search of a goal?
  • 53'
De Guzman breaks forward again and feeds Hernandez down the right. The Spanish winger tries to accelerate past Cole, but the left-back recovers and blocks the cross.
  • 51'
Swansea break quickly, as Hernandez feeds De Guzman. The Swans switch the play to Rangel, but the full-back's touch is heavy and Chelsea can break themselves with Mata, who feeds Ba, but the striker's shot curls wide of Tremmel's far post.
  • 49'
Davies loses possession and Chelsea break. Ba lays the ball off to Hazard, but Williams pulls out wide and thumps the ball clear, taking the Belgian out in the process. A fierce but fair challenge, though Hazard is now receiving treatment.
  • 47'
De Guzman plays a lovely through-ball behind Ivanovic for Hernandez to chase, but the linesman's flag is up.
  • 46'
Swansea get the second half underway.
  • Chelsea will be worried by the lack of chances they've created, with Tremmel only briefly worried by shots from range. The Blues have struggled to unlock a disciplined and brave Swansea defence, though looked dangerous in the final five minutes of the half. Unusually, Chelsea don't have that many options off the bench.
  • The home side have had the best chances of the first half, with Chelsea forced to block two goal-bound volleys from de Guzman and Routledge before Michu's burst through one-on-one against Cech, only for the Czech keeper to make a super save. The Swans have kept the ball well and defended even better, with Williams organising his defence excellently.
  • HALF-TIME!! It's been a pretty tame affair so far, and Chelsea have shown little adventure despite needing to score twice. The Blues have created few, if any, clear-cut chances, while Swansea have looked dangerous on the break.
  • 45' + 2'
Mata gets in behind the Swansea defence and pulls the ball back to the penalty spot. Fortunately for the home side, there wasn't a blue shirt there to convert the chance.
  • 45' + 1'
Mata's inswinging cross is headed clear by Rangel but Chelsea recover possession. Cole floats in a deep cros, which bounces off Davies and into the path of Ba. The Senegalese striker steadies himself before blasting a shot over the bar. Should have hit the target from that position.
  • 44'
Cole races down the left and crosses, but it's overhit. Oscar collects the loos ball, but his own cross doesn't get past Williams. The centre-back has looked impenetrable today.
  • 41'
Ki is going to soldier on, though he's moving a bit gingerly. Chelsea are still struggling to break Swansea down, but the home side look a threat on the break.
  • 39'
Ki is down and receiving treatment having been stamped on by Ramires. It looked a pretty horrible challenge, but the referee didn't spot it. The South Korean's match could be over.
  • 37'
Mata looks to be the player most likely to make things happen for Chelsea. The playmaker nutmegs Chico on the edge of the box and is preparing to shoot until Rangel clears the danger.
  • 35'
Cole escapes down the left and drills in a low cross, but Williams clears. Cahill collects the loose ball and launches a long ball into the box, which Hazard manages to flick towards goal, but Tremmel is able to collect with ease.
  • 34'
Ba flicks up Mata's pass and tries an acrobatic volley from the edge of the area, but - yet again - Williams is there to make an important block.
  • 31'
Mata attempts a speculative volley which falls into the path of Hazard. The Belgian's first-time flick finds Oscar, but the Brazilian can't quite control the ball and is swarmed by the Swansea defence.
  • 30'
Tremmel's kick goes straight to Hazard and Chelsea surge forward. The Belgian feeds Mata, who races to the byline, but Williams blocks his attempted to cross. Lucky escape for the Swans and their German goalkeeper.
  • 29'
Another scrappy passage of play as both sides gift possession to each other. Davies did superbly to make a recovery tackle on Mata.
  • 27'
Ba drills a cross into the box, and Mata flicks it onto Oscar. The Brazilian can't quite catch up with the ball, and Rangel is able to shepherd it out for a goal kick.
  • 26'
There are whistles and jeers from the Swansea fans as Ivanovic thumps another clearance upfield. They're not used to that at the Liberty Stadium.
  • 24'
Ramires receives the ball 30-yards out from goal and launches a rasping drive which is well saved by Tremmel. Chelsea have largely been limited to shots from range so far.
  • 23'
Oscar pounces on Ki, winning possession deep in Swansea's half. The Brazilian takes a touch and fires a shot towards goal, but Williams makes the block.
  • 21'
Cole bursts past Chico towards the byline and pulls the back, but Williams deflects in behind for a corner. Cahill's resulting header is cleared off the line by Rangel, but Hazard latches onto the loose ball and fires towards the bottom corner. Tremmel makes and the save and, crucially, holds onto the ball as several blue shirts raced towards him.
  • 19'
Ki almost finds Michu with a deft through-ball, which would have put him clean through, but Chelsea manage to intercept. Hazard races up the pitch but Chico makes a thunderous tackle.
  • 17'
Another good chance for Swansea. Rangel's long crossfield pass is headed into the path of de Guzman by Michu. The Dutch midfielder slams a volley towards goal, but Gary Cahill flings his body in the way of the shot. Great defending, although the Blues were opened up far too easily.
  • 16'
The match has yet to ignite in the same way that last night's tie between Aston Villa and Bradford did. Chelsea have shown little urgency, and won't overcommit in search of a goal.
  • 14'
Chelsea are struggling to break down a well organised Swansea outfit and have barely strung two passes together in the final third. Replays of the penalty incident show that Davies stuck a leg out, but withdrew it before contact with Ba was made. Good decision by the referee.
  • 12'
Swansea have started with real attacking aggression here, they're certainly not going to sit on their two-goal cushion.
  • 10'
Lovely Swansea pass-and-move football sees Routledge slide a pass behind Ivanovic for Michu. The Spaniard is clean through and strokes the ball towards the far corner, but Cech makes superb diving save.
  • 8'
Swansea launch a swift counter-attack, with de Guzman eventually floating a cross towards the back post where Routledge, unmarked, slams a volley towards goal. The ball deflects off Azpilicueta and almost goes in. Chelsea clear the subsequent corner.
  • 7'
Controversy! Mata feeds Ba, and the striker bursts into the box and past Davies, falling to the floor. Chelsea want a penalty, but referee Chris Foy ignores their pleas. Ba was looking for it.
  • 6'
Lampard and Oscar combine well done the right flank, but Rangel manages to recover and clear for a throw-in. The ball is played back to Ivanovic, who gifts possession back to Swansea.
  • 4'
Chelsea have started tentatively, yet to construct an attack of note and they haven't set up as gung-ho as you might expect.
  • 2'
Swansea have started in typical fashion, retaining possession and passing the ball around with confidence. Chelsea have barely touched the ball yet.
  • 1'
Chelsea get the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg underway.
  • The players are making their way onto the pitch and we're just minutes away from kick-off.
  • Michael Laudrup's side certainly know how to hold a lead, winning 13 of the 15 games in which they've opened the scoring this season and drawing the other two.
  • Swansea are in similarly good form, having lost just one of their last nine games, a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round replay. The Swans have lost just twice at the Liberty Stadium all season.
  • Chelsea have win their last six away game in all competitions, and conceded just 11 times on the road all season, though they are yet to overturn more than a one goal deficit.
  • Look away Chelsea fans, the Blues have drawn 1-1 with Swansea on their last two visits to south Wales, and haven't won away to the Welsh club since 1983.
  • Chelsea must overcome a two-goal deficit against the Swans, and have turned to Demba Ba – not Fernando Torres – to help them do it. The Blues are otherwise unchanged from the side that beat Arsenal on Sunday. David Luiz isn’t fit enough to start but is named on the bench, while the 34-year-old Frank Lampard makes his fourth start in just 11 days. Nigerian duo Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel are both unavailable for selection as they are competing at the Africa Cup of Nations.
  • Swansea have been handed a huge boost by the return of Chico. The Spanish defender missed the Premier League win over Stoke, and was a doubt for tonight’s game, but has shaken off the knock to start in place of Garry Monk. Danny Graham is the club’s leading scorer in the Capital One Cup, but he drops to the bench with Michu leading the line. Gerhard Tremmel is selected in goal by Michael Laudrup, having started the Swans’ previous five games in the competition.
  • Chelsea: Cech; Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Cole; Ramires, Lampard; Oscar, Mata, Hazard; Ba. Subs: Turnbull, Luiz, Ferreira, Terry, Bertrand, Marin, Torres.
  • Swansea: Tremmel; Rangel, Chico, Williams, Davies; Britton, Ki; Hernandez, De Guzman, Routledge; Michu. Subs: Vorm, Monk, Tiendalli, Lamah, Dyer, Shechter, Graham.
