Both teams will be without their World Cup-bound captains, but will want three points in close playoff races. The San Jose Earthquakes host the Houston Dynamo with each side looking to make gains in their respective playoff races.
The 'Quakes are currently seventh in the Western Conference with a 2-4-4 record, five points back from the fifth-place Colorado Rapids. Houston is better off, its 5-6-2 record good enough for fourth in the East.
A severely depleted San Jose lost 1-0 to league-leading Seattle last weekend, but could be set for a boost on the personnel front. Captain and star striker Chris Wondolowski is close by but unavailable, named to the 23-man USA roster for the World Cup. Not making that cut is Clarence Goodson, who returns with the previously-suspended pair of Victor Bernardez and Shea Salinas. Steven Lenhart should be available as well after missing out, but Tommy Muller (low back spasms), Andreas Gorlitz (R torn ACL), Ryan Neil (L knee sprain) and Alan Gordon (L groin strain) are all listed as out and Yannick Djalo (L groin tightness) is questionable.
Houston has its own losses. Wide men Brad Davis and Oscar Boniek Garcia are preparing for the World Cup with the USA and Honduras, respectively, while Eric Brunner (R ankle surgery), Ricardo Clark (concussion) and Tony Cascio (R knee surgery) are all out.
