San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 Columbus Crew: Gordon steals point at the death

San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 Columbus Crew: Gordon steals point at the death

Thearon W. Henderson

Alan Gordon's last-minute equalizer granted San Jose a point against a solid Crew side that had blocked a PK.

A late equalizer from a powerful center forward, penalty drama, a huge shot disparity and a sellout crowd of . . . 10,250. OK, so the Champions League final this was not, but the San Jose Earthquakes' 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew had excitement of its own variety.

It started early when Andy Gruenebaum made one of his seven saves to block a Chris Wondolowski penalty. Wondo leads the league with 11 goals, but Bruenebaum didn't let him inflate that tally.

Instead Columbus took the lead. Justin Meram coaxed the ball over Jon Busch from a tight angle with a surprising and smooth shot.

In all San Jose out-shot the Crew 24 to nine. But the equalizer didn't come until the very last seconds of regular time. Substitute Alan Gordon hit the post and responded with an acrobatic kung-fu volley to slam home the rebound immediately.
