An equalizer deep into stoppage time saved a point for the San Jose Earthquakes.
Chris Rolfe's goal came after 37 minutes to open the scoring. The Fire broke down the left and worked the ball back across the field before the forward picked it up 25 yards out, took a touch and floated a shot in at the far post.
The second half brought plenty of chances for both sides, but the goals weren't coming and a second yellow to Alan Gordon deep into stoppage time seemed to kill off any hope the home side had of a last-minute comeback.
But the Earthquakes would not leave empty handed. A goal from Steven Lenhart eight minutes into stoppage time brought the crowd to its feet and Chicago to settle for a point.
