Live Commentary

  • With that, I'm signing off. This has been Thomas Floyd (@thomasfloyd10) and I'll see you here for the playoffs.
  • The Sounders knocked out the first leg of the treble (which no MLS team has ever won) when they defeated Philadelphia in last month's U.S. Open Cup final. Now the only prize that remains is the big one: MLS Cup.
  • FINAL: Seattle Sounders 2, LA Galaxy 0. The Sounders win the Supporters' Shield, and are now two-thirds of the way to the domestic treble.
  • 90' + 5'
    GoalM. Pappa
  • 90' + 5'
    SubstitutionClint Dempsey Djimi Traore
  • 90' + 5'
GOAL PAPPA! The Guatemalan strips Penedo, who inexplicably took too much time on the ball outside his box, and then scoops DeLaGarza. What a cheeky finish over the backtracking defender.
  • 90' + 4'
Traore comes on for Dempsey, who gets a nice ovation.
  • 90' + 3'
Leonardo takes down Dempsey just outside the LA box, and the center back gets in the referee's face right after. Pappa's free kick goes off the wall, though.
  • 90' + 2'
Marshall trots off the field, which is a good sign for Seattle. He'll continue.
  • 90' + 1'
Gordon fires right at Frei! A service falls to the forward, who is all alone, but the shot goes straight to the goalkeeper. Marshall now down for Seattle — looks like a possible head injury after a collision with Frei.
  • 89'
Chance LA! Donovan looks for Gordon at the far post but the striker misfires from a tough angle.
  • 88'
    SubstitutionDan Gargan Jose Villarreal
  • 88'
Seattle earns a corner as Rogers heads a Pappa cross out. Now we get another sub for LA, as Villarreal replaces Gargan.
  • 86'
Martins played a quick free kick, executing a give-and-go with Dempsey before finding Pappa all alone at the far post. And the Guatemalan didn't miss, firing a shot past the charging Penedo.
  • 85'
    GoalM. Pappa
  • 85'
GOAL SOUNDERS! Marco Pappa has all but clinched the Supporters' Shield!
  • 82'
    SubstitutionBaggio Husidic Alan Gordon
  • 82'
Here comes Alan Gordon, replacing Husidic. The striker is known for his physicality and late-game heroics, so this move seems pretty appropriate.
  • 81'
Chance LA! Donovan whips in a free kick that deflects off a couple Seattle players and nearly goes in for an own goal, but Frei lunges to save.
  • 78'
Now Scott comes verrry close to a second yellow. Took down Donovan with a professional foul at midfield but no card.
  • 75'
Gargan also could've been punished for that sequence. He's already on a yellow, and he could still hear from the disciplinary committee, of course.
  • 73'
    SubstitutionBrad Evans M. Pappa
  • 73'
We have our first sub, with Pappa replacing Evans. Seattle scored a couple goals after making the same switch last weekend.
  • 71'
    Yellow CardMarcelo Sarvas
  • 71'
    Yellow CardG. Pineda
  • 71'
Wow, we have a big scuffle near midfield after a collision between Dempsey and Leonardo. Pineda and Sarvas both pick up yellow cards. Alonso lucky not to be booked for some shoves he delivered.
  • 70'
Another clearance for Marshall, who beats Zardes to the low cross from Ishizaki.
  • 69'
Zardes just wide! Sarvas wins the ball, it falls to Zardes and the striker fires a low, 20-yard effort just wide of the far post.
  • 65'
The attendance at CenturyLink Field: 57,673.
  • 63'
Evans takes down Rogers deep in Sounders territory, and there's a brief shoving match between the two. The ensuing set piece then was flagged for offside.
  • 62'
Zardes does well to dribble at the Sounders back line and look wide to find Ishizaki, who earns a corner. Marshall clears on the ensuing set piece.
  • 59'
Chance Seattle! Dempsey heads Pineda's corner back across the goalmouth toward Scott, but LA clears. That was a dangerous ball back into the mix.
  • 56'
Donovan finds Ishizaki down the right before a deflection falls to Gargan in dangerous territory. The right back's service into the box is snared by Frei, though.
  • 53'
Ishizaki's free kick deflects off the wall and goes out for a corner, but the Sounders clear the ensuing set piece.
  • 51'
    Yellow CardZach Scott
  • 51'
Yellow card for Scott, as Donovan carves his way through the Sounders defense and is taken down from behind just outside the box.
  • 50'
Pineda absorbs his game-leading fifth foul as DeLaGarza shoulder-charges him near midfield.
  • 49'
Evans collects the ball on the right side of the box and seems to get lost between crossing and shooting as he skies the ball out for a goal kick.
  • 46'
We're back for the second half!
  • Juninho-Sarvas combined to complete 67 passes (with 7 incomplete) in the first half. Just 34 (with 14 failed) for Alonso-Pineda.
  • Sounders coach Sigi Schmid on NBC: The Galaxy have been the better team, largely thanks to their tactical fouls. "Hopefully we'll get the referee behind us a little bit."
  • Halftime: Sounders 0, Galaxy 0. Dempsey chatting with Geiger after that physical first half.
  • 45' + 1'
Sarvas tests Frei with a dipping shot from 25 yards. The goalkeeper briefly bobbles it before collecting.
  • 43'
Chance LA! Donovan wins the ball from the stumbling Marshall, then loops a far-post cross that was looking for Husidic but instead found the hands of Frei.
  • 41'
Zardes called for a foul as he tries to strip Scott. So. Many. Fouls.
  • 40'
Dempsey nearly got in behind Leonardo, but the center back pokes the ball away and ends up drawing a foul as well.
  • 38'
    Yellow CardLandon Donovan
  • 38'
Donovan takes down Pineda near midfield — and the Sounders midfielder has no interest in Donovan's apology, slapping away his hand. Donovan gets a yellow for the foul.
  • 36'
Good opportunity on a free kick from the left as Rogers hits a cross off Yedlin's hand. Frei claims Ishizaki's set piece, though.
  • 35'
Gonzalez called for a foul as he nudges Ishizaki to the turf. A lot of whistles in this first half.
  • 33'
Donovan got the ball in transition and played a nice ball to Zardes, but the striker's first touch gets away from him.
  • 32'
But Juninho comes up with a powerful header to clear, and the Galaxy send away the second ball into the box as well.
  • 32'
Rogers hacks down Evans on the right flank and now the Sounders have a good free kick 30 yards from goal.
  • 31'
We have some more tussling off the ball as the Sounders win a free kick near midfield.
  • 28'
Broken record, I know, but the rhythm of this game is really disrupted by that bouncy turf. Neither team has really been able to settle the ball and maintain possession. Very different from last week's meeting on the natural grass at StubHub Center.
  • 27'
Zardes gets past Gonzalez down the right and hits a low cross that Marshall clears.
  • 25'
Donovan plays a pass straight to Yedlin. No Landon, he's not your teammate right now — your national team days are over, remember?
  • 22'
    Yellow CardDan Gargan
  • 22'
And now Gargan picks up a yellow for a late challenge on Neagle. These teams need to be careful — any ejections in this match will carry over to the playoffs.
  • 21'
Things getting very chippy in the box, as Martins slams DeLaGarza off the ball as retaliation for that previous foul. That's a clear yellow but the refs missed it.
  • 18'
DeLaGarza delivers a very hard challenge, hitting Martins with a shoulder to the back. No card, though.
  • 15'
    Yellow CardClint Dempsey
  • 15'
Dempsey picks up a yellow card for a forearm on DeLaGarza as those two battle for a 50-50 ball.
  • 14'
Chance LA! Pineda draws a foul near midfield, but the quick set piece is blocked and creates an LA counter. Ishizaki loops a ball over the top for Donovan, whose first touch goes to the charging Frei.
  • 10'
LA goes at Seattle on the counter before the opportunity ends with Zardes getting called for offside. Donovan did well to win the ball in midfield and spark that opportunity.
  • 8'
Gargan hits Seattle on the overlap and whips in a great cross that Yedlin manages to nod away.
  • 7'
Some chaotic moments at the top of Seattle's 18, with Leonardo wandering forward and getting a weak shot on Frei.
  • 4'
Another factor for the Galaxy: With a draw, they'll miss the Supporters' Shield but guarantee they stay above D.C. United in the pecking order to host MLS Cup.
  • 2'
Mark Geiger, who this past summer became the first American referee to helm a World Cup knockout-round game, is the man in the middle.
  • 1'
We're underway at CenturyLink Field! Nearly 60,000 expected to be in attendance.
  • This is the second straight meeting between these two teams, of course. The Sounders came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at StubHub Center last weekend, with goals from Clint Dempsey and Lamar Neagle negating tallies by Baggio Husidic and Marcelo Sarvas.
  • In addition to suspended center back Omar Gonzalez, the Galaxy are also missing striker Robbie Keane. The MVP candidate is being held out with a minor injury ahead of the playoffs.
  • Seattle bench: Hahnemann, Traore, Anibaba, Azira, Pappa, Cooper, Barrett
  • Seattle Sounders lineup: Frei; Yedlin, Marshall, Scott, Gonzalez; Evans, Alonso, Pineda, Neagle; Dempsey, Martins
  • LA subs: Rowe, Meyer, Sorto, Garcia, Walker, Villarreal, Gordon
  • Here is the starting lineup for the LA Galaxy: Penedo; Gargan, DeLaGarza, Leonardo, Rogers; Ishizaki, Sarvas, Juninho, Husidic; Donovan, Zardes
  • This also represents final regular-season match of Landon Donovan's illustrious career, which has seen him become the league's all-time leader in goals and assists.
  • The teams are even on 61 points, but Seattle has the edge in the tiebreaker (19 wins to LA's 17). So the Sounders will claim the Supporters' Shield and the Western Conference's No. 1 seed with a win or draw. The Galaxy must win to claim the Shield.
  • As we shift gears from Real Madrid's pulsating Clasico win over Barcelona, let me give you the implications of today's match.
  • Good afternoon, this is Thomas Floyd (@thomasfloyd10) and I'll be providing Goal's live commentary for this afternoon's Supporters' Shield decider between the Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy.
