Goals on either side of the half condemned the Revolution to their first home loss of the season.
The hosts were without Jerry Bengston, who is on international duty with Honduras, while the Red Bulls missed Roy Miller because of international duty with Costa Rica. Jonny Steele made the bench after returning from international duty, while Jameson Olave, Dax McCarty and Thierry Henry were unavailable.
The match nearly started with a bang when Lee Nguyen intercepted a pass just 20 seconds in and got down the wing. His cross set up a Patrick Mullins shot from atop the 18-yard box, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles was able to parry it away.
The match slowed after that, though the Revolution were still on the front foot for most of the first half. But it was the Red Bulls who opened the scoring in the 18th minute, as Eric Alexander headed a Lloyd Sam free kick into the net which had been vacated by Revs keeper Bobby Shuttleworth.
Robles was called into action again in the 24th minute when New England midfielder Chris Tierney fired in a left-footed screamer after shaking loose after a short corner, but the Red Bulls goalkeeper sent the ball over his crossbar.
The keeper again made a stop in the 30th minute, denying Teal Bunbury's effort from the right side of the Revs' attack. Robles couldn't stop Diego Fagundez's solo effort at an equalizer just before the referee's halftime whistle blew, but was relieved to see it hit the post and stay out.
The visitors doubled their advantage with 15 minutes to play. After a free kick was sent in, it fell to Peguy Luyindula at the top of the circle, and the Frenchman made no mistake when the ball sat up for him, driving it into the corner.
