Hardly had anything to do for 90 minutes, but produced a crucial – if routine – stop to deny Moukandjo in stoppage time. Did all that was asked of him, justifying selection ahead of Corona.
Captaining at a record fourth World Cup, the 35-year-old spent much of his time pushing forward into the midfield and he looked right at home. Linked up very well with Aguilar and used the ball well.
Like Layun on the opposite flank, Aguilar was a very useful option on the right. The America man did get caught out at the back once, but his outstanding deliveries helped him atone.
One of two exceptionally experienced defenders in the Mexican line-up, Rodriguez's distinct lack of pace was noticeable on occasion, but he was a calming and authoritative presence at the back.
The highly-rated Espanyol star was by far the least experienced of the Mexico central defenders, but an expertly-timed last-ditch challenge to deny Eto'o in the first half summed up an assured display.
The attacking left-back has come a long way from being blamed for all of Club America's woes in 2011 and he was constantly an out-ball for Mexico in Natal. His final ball needs to improve, but his runs were very dangerous.
Luis Montes' replacement after suffering a broken leg seemed a sound choice on this evidence. Although unspectacular on the ball, he let the more creative players do their job and he was busy without possession.
Endured a difficult debut campaign at Porto but he showed flashes of what persuaded them to snap him up from Pachuca here. His distribution was inventive and he looked particularly effective in tight spaces.
Due to coach Herrera's vast injury concerns in midfield, Guardado was forced to take up an unfamiliar central role and he did not look comfortable. The 27-year-old's passing was a little erratic, but his energetic nature proved useful.

The crafty, creative spark of Mexico's attack was as lively as ever and unluckily saw two goals chalked off in controversial circumstances. Cameroon had little answer to his dangerous roaming.
Unsurprisingly given the nod ahead of the out-of-form Javier Hernandez and he repaid the faith of his coach. He struggled against the physical N'Koulou at time, but he netted the all-important goal.
On the whole, Itandje did well and denied Mexico several times, but he will be disappointed that he was unable to hold on to Giovani's shot, allowing Peralta to net from the rebound.
The steadiest of the Cameroon defenders. He produced a number of well-timed tackles, but ultimately he was fighting a losing battle as his team-mates failed to match his display.
The experienced left-back started ahead of Henri Bedimo and he often failed to keep a lid on the lively Aguilar, but on a few occasions he did prove to be a viable option going forward.
The right-back struggled immensely against the rampaging Layun in the first half and he was unsurprisingly hooked for Nounkeu at the break.
Positionally, the Galatasaray defender was suspect on several occasions and he was lucky to not concede a penalty for a clumsy tackle on Giovani at the end of the first half.
The QPR-owned midfielder produced a display more reminiscent of his time in the Premier League than his impressive loan at Sevilla. He looked dangerous going forward, but did not appear that interested in defending.
Looked really up for a battle early on, but he faded badly as the match went on and the game effectively bypassed him.
Much-maligned at club level with Barcelona, he produced a few flashes here and there, but generally he was unable to stamp much authority on the match in a disappointing display.
A little better than Moukandjo on the opposite flank, but disappointing nonetheless. Tried to craft openings on the left, but Aguilar generally had the better of him.
Accused of "high treason" by Cameroonian media in the wake of the team's controversial World Cup build-up, he did little to deflect the criticism aimed at him with a lacklustre display, although the service to him was poor.
Showed some brief glimpses of ability in the second period, but they were far too infrequent and his crossing was dreadful. Did not do anywhere near enough.
