Houston Dynamo 0-0 Sporting Kansas City: Status quo preserved in late-season draw

Houston Dynamo 0-0 Sporting Kansas City: Status quo preserved in late-season draw

G. Newman Lowrance

Both sides were missing key components, and both failed to gain ground as Houston and Kansas City played out a dull, scoreless match at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Houston Dynamo drew 0-0 with Sporting Kansas City in a draw that will do little to please either side.

Kansas City missed out an opportunity to move out in front of the Supporters' Shield race, while Houston stumbled in its late-season bid for the top of the Eastern Conference. Both were missing key components, as Sporting KC's Graham Zusi and Matt Besler were with the U.S. national team, and Houston's Oscar Boniek Garcia (Honduras) and Jermaine Taylor (Jamaica) were on international duty as well.

Houston perhaps had the better of the run of play, but Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen did well to deny Dynamo forward Will Bruin in both the sixth and 68th minutes, pulling out reflex saves on tight angle shots in either half.

Kansas City (15-10-7) stays in second place in the East, a point behind the New York Red Bulls. Houston (13-10-9) is in third, four points back, but also on a five-game unbeaten run.
