The Timbers are still seeking their first victory of the season after an uneventful affair in Houston saw the teams split a point.
The Houston Dynamo and Portland Timbers played to a 1-1 draw Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium.
In the 16th minute Will Bruin was on the mark, heading Brad Davis’ cross from the left-hand side of the Dynamo past Donovan Ricketts.
Gaston Fernandez leveled the affair in the 33rd minute after Kalif Alhassan sent an entry pass to Darlington Nagbe that missed the mark. La Gata alertly ran onto the ball and smashed it into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Ricketts was whistled in the 65th minute when he used his hand to steady a touch he had taken after a back pass and the Dynamo took an indirect free kick. Davis’ inswinging kick was knocked around in the box but eventually played out for a corner kick.
Ricketts didn’t falter the next time he was called upon. David Horst played a long ball forward to Giles Barnes who was able to get into the box and push to the byline. He centered the ball to Bruin but the Jamaican keeper was quick off his line to block the effort.
Aside from those two moments, the second half lagged, with both sides perhaps attempting to recall playing in Houston during the warmer months.
Nagbe exited the much in the 87th minute with what appeared to be an injury to his right leg.
