Shots on Target
Once again, I'm Rudi Schuller (@RudiSchuller) and it was my pleasure to bring you tonight's action. Thanks for keeping me company.
The result brings Heredia level on points and goals with Montreal now, as both sides have 3 points and a neutral goal differential. The Impact will have to hope that San Jose can do something against the Guatemalans, or else the hill will become much bigger in the later stages of the round.
And that's it! Heredia has pulled off somewhat of a stunner tonight in defeating Montreal 1-0. On the balance of play, the Guatemalans are probably deserving of the three points, although Montreal looked much more interested after Bernardello had entered play. A draw would have been a fair result as well, but the Impact don't really have much to complain about given the number of chances they allowed.

Almost immediately after the Tissot miss, a Heredia player is down on the field looking like he's been shot. In something of an extreme rarity, it's his own players who carry him off the field at the urging of the referee.
CLOSE! Tissot squanders a golden opportunity as the Impact press for the late equalizer. Wenger leaves the ball for the homegrown defender, but his efoort is poor and wide. He needed to do better there.
Heredia takes a short corner, and a ball is sent into the six that Bush can't handle. The rebound falls right to Cordoba, who pokes it home. That might be the dagger.
Heredia coming closer and earning a corner kick. The hosts have looked much more dangerous in the past few minutes.
Just like that, Heredia charges down the field and forces Bush to charge out to smother at the top of his area. The keeper loses control of the ball while on the ground, but an Impact defender is luckily the closest to the loose ball.
Wenger gets his first touch inside the Heredia defensive third. He cuts inside and leaves the ball for an onrushing Arnaud, who skies the shot from 20 yards out.
Andrade decides to have a go from 25 yards out that doesn't miss by much. He's caused some problems cutting in from the right flank in the few moments he's been in the match.
OFF THE POST! Paponi does brilliantly well to advance the ball down the left sideline and cut inside to the middle of the pitch. He sends a ball into Smith, whose incredible first touch sends him in alone on the Heredia goal. Smith slots it past a charging Calderon, but the ball cruelly hits the woodwork and bounces away harmlessly. The Impact youngster holds his head in frustration, as he was inches away from a highlight reel strike.
Both players are back on the pitch after being tended to by their respective medical styaff, and it looks like neither are worse for the wear.
OUCH! A high ball gets served into the Montreal area, and two players collide with their heads as they leap for the loose ball. Tissot is down from the Impact, and Lopez looks to be in considerable pain as well. That was a nasty collision for both players.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of affect Bernardello will have on this match.
SAVE CALDERON! Paponi and Smith try a bit of interplay down the near sideline, and it looks like it will be broken up, but a fortuitous bounce allows Smith to send Paponi in one on one with a defender inside the 18. The Impact attacker does well to get himself a half-yard to shoot, but his effort is well-snared by the Heredia netminder. That was arguably Montreal's best chance of the night so far.
SHOT WIDE! Montreal turns the ball over at midfield and Miranda finds acres of space to push forward. The Heredia player walks down the middle and unleashes a curler from 20 yards that bends wide.
CLOSE CALL! Heredia sends in a LONG floated ball that finds a charging Cordoba. The big man gets his head on it before Bush can arrive, and the ball goes agonizingly close to the top of the crossbar. The Impact defence was nearly caught napping on a textbook Route 1 play by the Guatemalans.
Montreal earns a corner that Smith sends over everyone. The Impact's set pieces have left much to be desired so far.
Heredia seems to be settling into a possession advantage, which isn't much of a surprise considering the circumstances. Montreal playing purely in counterattack mode, with just one striker leading the line.
And we're back! Montreal will play down a man.
It looks like Hassoun Camara will be taking Felipe's spot in the lineup to start the second half. The Impact will lose something in the attack, but they desperately needed to shore up the defensive end.
But on the whole, Heredia was the better side in the first 45 minutes, referee decisions or not. Marco Schallibaum will have to make some key adjustments if he wants to get something out of this match, especially with only 10 men from here on out.
What we've seen is that this referee will not hesitate to reach for his whistle, or for his pocket. He also awarded a very soft penalty to Heredia early on that was saved by the crossbar.
Montreal will feel fortunate not to be down a goal or two, given the way Heredia dominated play for a good 15-20 minute stretch in the opening frame. That said, the Impact will also feel aggrieved to be down a man after a red card was shown for a rather routibe foul by Lopez.
There didn't seem to be much time added on after the ejection, especially considering Bush's prolonged injury, but either way the half ends at 0-0.
Red CardAdrain Lopez
Lopez is given his walking papers after dishing out a hard challenge in the middle of the pitch. It was definitely a foul, but the call looked rather harsh from where I'm sitting. Regardless, the Impact will play the entire second half down a man.
Yellow CardRodolfo González
Smith tries to break down the left flank and attempts to chip the ball past Gonzalez, who knocks it with his arm to kill the attack. The ref felt that the action was intentional, and the caution is shown.
Free kick to Heredia on the near side. The Guatemalans run a set play that sees a man receive the ball at the top of the 18, but his curled effort is well saved.
The game has slowed to a crawl since Bush went down injured, which may have been part of the plan by Montreal. That's not to say that the 'keeper wasn't legitimately hurt, but rather than the Impact took advantage of the situation to take their time and regroup during the stoppage in play.
Yellow CardCollen Warner
Warner loses possession in the middle of the park and proceeds to slide right through an opponent. A fair call.
We're back underway as Bush looks to have shaken off the pain.
Bush is down on the turf after a hard collision with a couple of other players at the top of his area. He looks to be in considerable pain as he's being tended to by the Impact training staff.
Over the past several minutes, Heredia has had Montreal under siege. The visitors have to feel relieved that they haven't given up a goal yet.
GREAT SAVE BUSH! Espinoza latches on to a rebound and fires a low drive through a crowd that Bush does incredibly well to save with his right foot. The Impact GK was diving in the opposite direction as Espinoza's shot had deflected off a teammate on the way in. Either way, great stuff by the backup keeper.
Missed PenaltyC. Córdoba
OFF THE CROSSBAR! The shot is blasted over Bush but off the underside of the bar. It bounces on the line and out, and the Impact keeper rises high to grab the rebound. That seemed to be a bit of justice served for Montreal, as the foul was very soft.
PENALTY! An Heredia player makes a meal of contact in the box and the ref points to the spot.
SHOT HEREDIA! Cordoba gets the game's first real chance as he drills an effort from outside the area. It's nothing Bush can't handle, however.
Nyassi fouled just outside the Heredia box. Free kick taken by Smith, who tries to be cute and play the short pass into Nyassi, but the Gambian was not ready for the ball. It rolls out harmlessly for a goal kick. Wasted chance there.
This match is being played at 100 mph right now. It's hard to imagine that the teams can keep up this pace, and the play is somewat choppy/rough because of it. It has to be said that the surface is dictating the match pace, at the moment.
Warner earns a free kick 40 yards from goal that Felipe takes. He squares a ball to Arnaud, who lobs it into the Heredia area, but the keeper does well to punch the ball out.
The artificial surface at the stadium is playing very quick, and the ball is bouncing high. Time will tell which team this will be an advantage for, as Heredia doesn't normally host matches in Guatemala City.
Free kick to Heredia on the far side of the Montreal penalty area. De Matta has a direct shot on goal that's handled well by Bush.
Montreal have already had a corner kick after Blake Smith put the hosts under immediate pressure.
The ref blows his whistle to start the match!
We're almost underway at the Estadio Cementos Progreso.

Heredia's starting XI: H.Medina (CAP) J.Calderon (GK) R.Gonzalez, W.Velasquez, D.Espinoza, H. De Mata, R.Arias, W. Garcia, E.Miranda, C.Cordova, OLopez
The Impact left several veterans in Montreal, including Marco Di Vaio, Patrice Bernier, and Alessandro Nesta. IMFC is anticipating a hotly contested MLS game on Saturday against Houston, and they figure they've got enough firepower to leave the older guys at home.
Montreal subs: Perkins, Ouimette, Camara, Bernardello, Romero, Pisanu, Wenger
Montreal starting XI: Bush; Tissot, Lefèvre, Lopez, Brovsky; Warner, Arnaud (C), Smith, Felipe, Nyassi; Paponi
