The Cuban side is a bit of a mystery. Canada sent scouts to watch the "senior team" in a friendly recently, only to see the U-23 team sent in its place.

- Both nations have a solitary World Cup experience: Canada in 1986 and Cuba in 1938.
- Canada has enjoyed recent success against CONCACAF opposition in the previous Wordl Cup qualifying round, winning 3-0 over Puerto Rico, 7-0 against St. Lucia and 4-0 versus St. Kitts and Nevis.
- The 145th-ranked Cubans are at the bottom of the CONCACAF's Group C in terms of ranking. Canada is 77th in the FIFA rankings. These two teams are the lowest ranked in Group C.
Panama and Honduras round out Group C. The top two teams advance to the final CONCACAF qualifying round for the World Cup, known as "The Hex."
