The MLS champs cling to a one-goal advantage heading to the Estadio Azul, where the Liga MX leaders await.Sporting Kansas City travels to Mexico City to face Cruz Azul in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday.
In the first leg last Wednesday, Sporting KC defender Kevin Ellis scored in the 17th minute to give his side a slender advantage heading into the second leg.
Even with a 1-0 advantage, the defending MLS champions face a daunting task at altitude at the Estadio Azul. Cruz Azul breezed through the group stage with a 4-0-0 record, winning both of its home games 3-0.
La Máquina is currently in first place in Liga MX and is coming off a 2-1 win over Club Tijuana at the weekend in which in-form attacker Marco Fabian scored both goals.
The visitors will have to rely on their stout defense, led by center back duo Matt Besler and Aurélien Collin. In five games in the CCL so far, Sporting KC has conceded just one goal. They'll be without fullback Seth Sinovic, who is suspended, as are Rogelio Chavez Alejandro Castro for Cruz Azul.
Whichever side advances from the tie will face either the LA Galaxy or Club Tijuana in the semifinal in early April.
