It's all over!!! Mexico loses 2-1 but two goals from the USA in stoppage time down Panama, saving El Tri. Mexico backs into fourth place and clinches a spot in the playoff against New Zealand. Incredible drama in CONCACAF tonight!!!
90' + 4'
USA SCORES AGAIN!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!
90' + 3'
OH MY GOODNESS!! GOAL USA!!! GRAHAM ZUSI SAVES MEXICO!!!
90' + 2'
Yellow Card K. Navas
90' + 2'
Long ball forward and Jimenez gets a head on it, but it trickles harmlessly wide
Four minutes of added time
Long, aimless balls forward for El Tri now. The team looks out of ideas. In a few minutes, it will be out of the World Cup
Some time wasting for Costa Rica now. Not long to go....
This is unbelievable. Costa Rica with a long shot saved by Ochoa. Mexico needs a hero badly
GOAL PANAMA!!!! MEXICO MUST SCORE NOW OR IT'S OUT OF THE WORLD CUP
Layun with a long strike that doesn't trouble Navas much
El Tri looks just about spent here, and it looks like the team may just have to pray that Panama doesn't score in the final 10 minutes against the USA
Costa Rica pushing for the killer third here as the Mexico backline looks spent. Awful tackle by Gimenez results in a yellow and a free kick
Michael Barrantes Rojas
Jorge Emmanuel Torres
Bolanos OFF THE POST! A quick one-two with Saborio completely unlocks the Mexico backline, and Bolanos with a clipped finish over the onrushing Ochoa and just trickles off the far post. That would've sealed it
José Miguel Cubero Loria
We're keeping an eye on Panama/USA just as much as this one right now, as one goal for Panama will send Mexico out of the World Cup. Incredible drama in the final day of qualifying!
Ochoa with a huge save on the other end off a header, keeping Mexico in the game
Giovani dos Santos
Meanwhile, Navas makes a HUGE safe to keep Costa Rica in front. End to end action right now.
Amazingly, the USA scores against Panama at the exact same time as the Costa Rica goal, meaning El Tri is still safe in fourth place for now. Incredible action
Assist Cristian Gamboa
Goal A. Saborío
GOAL COSTA RICA! Saborio heads home from close range after a wonderful cross from the right flank by Gamboa and the RSL man was completely unmarked from six yards out
Yellow Card Rafa Márquez
Borges blasts the free kick way over. Wasted chance
Oviedo fouled by Aquino from behind, resulting in another yellow. Free kick upcoming
And now Chicharito pulled for Raul Jimenez. Rough night for the Man United striker
Wow, some fisticuffs in the box results in Chicharito getting a yellow card for a little slap on Acosta and he is now OUT for the first leg of a potential playoff against New Zealand
Yellow Card J. Acosta
So dangerous! Costa Rica's long free kick is almost knocked in for an own goal, but the ball bounces kindly to Ochoa
Now Torres Nilo flies into a tackle recklessly, taking Campbell out and earning a yellow in the process
Yellow Card Jorge Emmanuel Torres
Saborio shows his fresh legs and blows by Torres Nilo, causing the left back to commit a foul
Acosta with a silly foul, barging into Peralta from behind and giving El Tri a free kick from the left flank
Alvaro Saborio enters the game for Ruiz. The RSL man is a dangerous goalscorer and could mark the difference in a tight game like this
We are underway in the second half! 45 minutes for Mexico to hold on and clinch a playoff spot against New Zealand. But El Tri's hold on that spot is tenuous right now, with one goal conceded seeing the team out
Nothing comes of Mexico's last-gasp free kick, and that is the end to the half. Costa Rica 1, Mexico 1. Take a few minutes to breathe and get ready for a wild second half.
COSTA RICA JUST WIDE!! Campbell races down the right and cuts back for Bolanos, but he put his shot from inside the area wide of Ochoa's right post. So close.
Into two minutes of stoppage time.
It doesn't come, though, as Zavala clears. Back and forth we go. What a gripping half this has been.
Corner kick for Costa Rica as the half reaches its end. Fans sensing a go-ahead goal.
And Navas races off his line against to beat Chicharito to Pena's through ball before he can run onto it after getting in behind the defense.
Marvelous build up with a cross field ball ahead from Peralta to Aquino, who crossed to Chicharito making the near-post run. The Manchester United forward redirected his shot into the side netting, though, failing to put Mexico ahead.
CHICHARITO COMES CLOSE BUT MISSES AGAIN!!
What a run by Gamboa down the right flank, but his cross leads to nothing, as Marquez clears the danger.
Honduras has gone up 2-1 on Jamaica, which would clinch CONCACAF's final automatic berth if that score holds.
BORGES cuts centrally and pulls a low shot wide of the post. A goal by either side as this half winds down would be HUGE.
Ochoa comes off his line aggressively to palm away a ball headed for Ruiz, punching it away for a Costa Rica throw. Ochoa been OK so far, nothing he really could have done to prevent Ruiz's opener.
Torres Nilo crosses through from the right for Chicharito at the top of the box, but he can't quite extend his boot to it. Chicharito not even close to the best version of himself at the moment. Wonder if a change of club scenery would do him a world of good this winter.
Oviedo sends a cross from the left wayward and over Ochoa's goal, giving Memo a chance to settle things and for Mexico to set up down the field. Final 10 minutes of a wild first half.
Credit to Mexico for not folding following conceding that goal. Could have been a complete back breaker and speaks to the fact that Mexico's psyche may not be as fragile as it was in past months. A draw is good enough.
Chicharito had another would-be chance swatted off his foot by Navas, but Peralta was there to follow up and fired his shot off the underside of the crossbar. Now Mexico BACK IN to fourth place. Unreal turn of events.
Goal O. Peralta
GOAL MEXICO!!!! PERALTA GETS IT RIGHT BACK!!!
AND NOW THINGS ARE INTERESTING. Minutes after Chicharito's miss, Ruiz gets in behind Marquez and Ayala, settles a clipped ball in from the right, and swings a left-footed volley past a helpless Ochoa. With the way things currently stand, Mexico is OUT OF THE WORLD CUP completely.
Goal Bryan Ruiz
GOAL COSTA RICA!!! BRYAN RUIZ!!!!
Good news for Mexico is that El Tri is starting to exert more control over the run of play, bad news is that the chances are being thwarted. Still scoreless.
SLIDING BLOCK GONZALEZ!! Robs Mexico of a would be shot on frame! Great work by Aquino to set that up.
And just as Mexico misses its chance to go ahead, Panama goes ahead through Gabriel Torres. This scoreline still gets Mexico through, but the margin for error just became 0.
That was Mexico's best moment of the match by far, with a perfect ball splitting the defense for Peralta, who timed his run to perfection. He crossed to a wide open Chicharito, with Navas off his line, but Chicharito flat out mishit the ball, and it hit off Peralta, who was in an offside position. About sums up Mexico's qualifying campaign right there.
CATASTROPHE FOR MEXICO!!! Chicharito completely blows a wide open net and mishits a ball toward Peralta in an offside position where it deflects off him and in!! WOW
Costa Rica still controlling the possession battle as Mexico looks to build out of the back. Balls from Zavala and Marquez wasteful, though.
Jamaica and Honduras tied 1-1 with goals from Deshorn Brown and Carlos Costly. As of now that result does not help Mexico. Honduras needs to lose in order for Mexico to have any shot at 3rd place. USA-Panama currently tied at 0-0, which does help El Tri.
Ochoa slips on the choppy turf after receiving a back pass, taking a huge chunk of the field with him. Everyone better be on hamstring and ligament patrol tonight. Awful surface.
The Fulham man got in between and behind Marquez and Ayala, and Oviedo found him with a perfect ball over the top. Ochoa rushed off his line to cut down Ruiz's angle, and he could only put his low shot wide of the post. All Costa Rica to start.
Ruiz goes inches wide!!
So hard to believe that in a do-or-die game, Andres Guardado is not even on the Mexico roster and Giovani Dos Santos is not a shoo-in for the starting lineup. How things change.
Costa Rica continuing to pressure, winning a corner kick. The Ticos take it short, but the ensuing cross is dealt with. El Tri has to weather this early storm. First 15-20 minutes so vital.
HEADER OVER THE BAR!! Gonzalez got a clean look in the center of the six-yard box but put his header high.
Crowd clearly behind the home side as Costa Rica works down the field with some flair before Aqunio fouls Acosta from behind and leads to a Ticos free kick from about 25 yards out. First test for the Mexico defense and Guillermo Ochoa.
Zavala walks off on his own power, maybe caught a stud from Oviedo, and Mexico restarts through Rafa Marquez.
Yellow Card Bryan Oviedo
Choppy pitch at the Estadio Nacional leads to players slipping off the bat, and Zavala is down after sliding through Bryan Oviedo.
90 minutes to determine Mexico's World Cup fate....and this match is underway!
Pretty wild to think that in a big way the USA can control Mexico's World Cup fate. Despite the rivalry, most USA players and fans would want Mexico in the World Cup. A CONCACAF with a strong USA and Mexico is good for the region's representation.
Anthems being played at a raucous Estadio Nacional, with first kick minutes away. If Mexico wins or draws, regardless of other results, it heads to a home-and-away playoff with New Zealand next month for a place in Brazil. If Mexico loses, it could be out of qualifying altogether with a Panama win over the USA. If Mexico wins and Honduras loses at Jamaica, Mexico could qualify directly to Brazil tonight, if it can make up a -2 goal differential. All on the line as all three Hex finales get set to go live.
In the build-up to the match, Joel Campbell ruffled quited a few feathers stating about Mexico that "sometimes they think they're Spain" speaking to El Tri's arrogance. No doubt that Mexico has been humbled throughout the qualifying process, and it will love nothing more than to answer Campbell's comment with its play on the field.
Keilor Navas, Michael Umana, Bryan Oviedo, Cristian Gamboa, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Johnny Acosta, Carlos Borges, Cristian Bolanos, Yeltsin Tejeda, Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell
Costa Rica has already qualified for the World Cup and can finish no lower than third in the Hexagonal, but still trots out a sound lineup knowing that it can potentially eliminate Mexico from World Cup contention. Here how Los Ticos line up:
Guillermo Ochoa, Hugo Ayala, Rafa Marquez, Miguel Layun, Jorge Torres Nilo, Javier Aquino, Jesus Zavala, Carlos Pena, Chaco Gimenez, Oribe Peralta, Javier Hernandez
Victor Manuel Vucetich has made a calculated gamble with his lineup, leaving Giovani Dos Santos out of his starting XI. Here is who is lining up for El Tri at Estadio Nacional this evening:
Good evening everybody and welcome to tonight's live commentary for the crucial World Cup quailfying match between Costa Rica and Mexico. El Tri took a big step toward securing at least 4th place in the CONCACAF Hexagonal on Friday, but a loss could mean that Mexico misses the World Cup completely, should Panama beat the United States.
