Greg Garza makes first start since November

The American fullback has worked his way back from an Achilles tendon injury and made his first competitive start of the season.

American left back Greg Garza started for Club Tijuana in Saturday's 1-0 loss to Querétaro, returning after a four-month injury layoff. His previous competitive start came against San Luis on Nov. 3, 2012.

The 21-year-old also featured from the beginning against the LA Galaxy in a February friendly. He came off the bench for the final five minutes of the 1-0 win over Club World Cup champion Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday. That was his first appearance since substitute appearances in both games against Monterrey in the Liga MX Apertura quarterfinal.

The Xolos have played a second string in league games this season, concentrating on the Copa Libertadores instead. Tijuana has won all three games in that competition thus far.

With Edgar Castillo (facial fractures) injured and Joshua Ábrego suspended, Garza started against Queretaro. Wilberto Cosme scored the game's only goal.

"We had four, five opportunities to score and we didn’t take advantage of it," Tijuana coach Antonio 'El Turco' Mohamed said. "We didn’t work as a team with this group but that’s not an excuse. We have made it clear that the Copa Libertadores is the focus, but we prepare for these matches the same way, we just didn’t get it done. We knew this could happen having two different groups of players."

The loss dropped the Xolos down to fifth in the league, with Herculez Gomez's Santos Laguna leapfrogging them.
