Adam Le Fondre came off the bench to secure a comeback victory for the Brian McDermott's side, after the superb Yohan Cabaye had given Newcastle the lead in the opening period
Had little in the way of direct action, but punched a number of dangerous crosses away. Mis-read Kebe's cross as Le Fondre stole in to equalize.

Fabricio Coloccini
Allowed Williamson to handle the aerial threat of Pogrebnyak, but failed to mop up attacks as he often does. Has looked distracted and ponderous in recent weeks and did so again with his Toon future uncertain.

Davide Santon
Attacked with purpose but left gaps at the back, one of which was punished as Kebe got in behind him and crossed for Le Fondre to bundle home an equalizer.

Mike Williamson
Dominated Pogrebnyak in the aerial challenge, beating the giant Russian time after time. Picked up a harsh booking for tripping Kebe, despite trying to avoid contact with the Malian.

Mathieu Debuchy
Given a home debut and enjoyed a tough battle with McCleary throughout. Rarely let the winger get the better of him and also charged forward, taking advantage of Harte's lack of pace, knocking a couple of dangerous balls into the box.

Yohan Cabaye
Making his first start for over two months and put in a masterful display in midfield. Picked the right pass routinely, intercepted passes and burst forward well. Capped an excellent afternoon's work with a perfectly-placed free kick to give the hosts the lead.

Vurnon Anita
Not as influential as he has been in recent weeks. Ceded the playmaker role to Cabaye and was left in a more defensive role, but saw little action as the Royals attacked in wide areas and with long balls.

Jonas Gutierrez
Works hard on the left and ensures that Santon is never short of defensive support, but just lacks the technical ability to be a constant threat on the left flank. Struggled to get the better of Kelly throughout and his delivery was poor when he did manage to get past.

Sylvain Marveaux
Troubled the Royals a couple of times with his direct running and won the free kick that Cabaye scored from. Replaced by Perch in the second half to add midfield stability to the hosts.

Shola Ameobi
Wasted in a wide-right role, even if he was up against Harte. Swapped with Cisse throughout the match, and looked a threat late as Newcastle aimed long balls at him in a desperate attempt to equalize.

Papiss Cissé
Unlucky not to score as Federici made two excellent saves to deny him, but the No. 9 could have made more of one volleyed chance. Toiled hard throughout, constantly putting the Royals' defense under pressure and giving his teammates an out-ball in the channels.

Brought on for Marveaux to add defensive steel to midfield but the move backfired as the Royals quickly scored twice.

Gabriel Obertan
A late introduction as Newcastle looked to attack, but had no impact at all.
Made a brave point-blank save at Cisse's feet after tipping away his sharp header to keep things scoreless but was helpless soon after as Cabaye curled a free kick right into the top corner of his goal.

Looked clumsy against Cisse for the most part, but made several last-ditch blocks and tackles late on as the Royals held out for a thrilling win.

Adrian Mariappa
Unable to handle the physical presence of Cisse and Ameobi for large parts of the game, denied the Magpies a second early in the second half, however, with a great diving header to cut out Cisse's cross that looked set to give Marveaux a tap-in

Flop of the Match
Often left too much space behind him at left back which the hosts capitalized on several times, while he lacked the pace to recover adequately. Curled one dangerous free kick in just after the break that almost crept in at the far post.

Stephen Kelly
Made his Royals debut at right back and was given few problems by Jonas down his flank. Kept to his position determinedly, meaning his attacking threat was extremely limited.

Spent much of the game chasing Cabaye's shadow as the Frenchman ran the game from the center of the park and was unable to get himself involved for the most part.

Tried to beat Debuchy for pace but found the France international more than a match for his speed. Managed to get past his man once, but saw Pogrebnyak skew an effort wide from his cross. Replaced by Akpan after the hour.

Looked a constant threat against Santon on the right wing and got the Royals back into things as he beat the Italian and played a great ball across goal that Le Fondre turned home.

Making his first return to St James' Park since leaving for Reading in the summer and played neatly before being replaced by Le Fondre as the visitors searched for an equalizer. Given a warm reception by the home fans.

Should have opened the scoring in the opening period, but could only slide an effort wide from McCleary's cut-back with the goal gaping. Fired another effort well over and found himself being beaten in the air by the hosts' defense throughout.
