Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon cancel out first-half strikes from Demba Ba and Eden Hazard after the interval as the Saints mount a stirring comeback at Stamford Bridge

    Petr Cech

Despite his teammates doing their best to keep him busy by giving the ball away in their own half early on, he was a glorified spectator for long periods. Could do nothing about Lambert's excellent header or Puncheon's sensational half-volley.

  • Ashley Cole

    2.50

    Ashley Cole

With Puncheon instructed to sit deep he spent most of the match as an auxiliary winger, and made a nuisance of himself without making the decisive breakthrough.

  • David Luiz

    3.00

    David Luiz

A couple of daft passes aside he was solid, and rarely troubled by a very isolated Rodriguez. Lambert posed a stiffer test, however.

  • Gary Cahill

    2.50

    Gary Cahill

Dealt comfortably with Rodriguez and was rarely beaten in the air or on the floor, although his passing might have been more incisive at times.

  • César Azpilicueta

    2.50

    César Azpilicueta

Given plenty of license to roam forward, his crossing was invariably poor, although one of his more dangerous deliveries did lead to Ba's opener. Lost Lambert for Southampton's goal.

  • Ramires

    2.50

    Ramires

Wayward on the ball early on, he grew into proceedings and gradually his athleticism and energy began to have an impact. Was unlucky to be denied by the crossbar in the build-up to Hazard's goal.

  • Frank Lampard

    9
    2.50

    Frank Lampard

Looked alarmingly off the pace in the opening exchanges, but began to dictate things as the first half wore on, although his usually reliable finishing let him down.

  • Oscar
    5
    7
    2.00

    Oscar

One of the more frustrating nights for the talented Brazilian. His touch and passing deserted him for spells and, when they didn't, he couldn't find a killer final touch.

  • Eden Hazard
    7
    3
    3.50

    Eden Hazard

The most dangerous player on the pitch. His direct running, skill and awareness often caused panic in the Southampton defense, and his finish on the stroke of halftime was the epitome of calm and class.

  • Juan Mata
    5
    3
    3.00

    Juan Mata

Constantly probing from a central position, this wasn't his most influential performance, although he still produced one or two thrilling moments of magic.

  • Demba Ba
    10
    1
    3.50

    Demba Ba

Links up with Chelsea's creators more formidably than Torres has all season, and some of his combination play with Hazard was sublime. When he got his chance on 25 minutes, you never doubted he'd take it.

Substitutions

  • Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres Flop of the Match

Full of effort and running but, having fashioned a good chance for himself with five minutes left, he once again fluffed his lines.

  • Artur Boruc

    2.50

    Artur Boruc

Commanded his area reasonably well, and was helpless to prevent either Ba or Hazard finding the net.

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    0
    2.50

    Nathaniel Clyne

Tormented by Hazard defensively, he got his own back in the second half when he rode the Belgian's tame challenge to cross for Lambert's goal.

  • Maya Yoshida
    2
    1
    2.00

    Maya Yoshida

Never looked comfortable dealing with Ba. His distribution out of defense was good, but it's the defensive fundamentals which look shaky.

  • Jos Hooiveld
    2

    2.00

    Jos Hooiveld

Wasn't strong enough at the near post to prevent Azpilicueta's cross finding Ba for Chelsea's opener, and still struggles to convince at this level.

  • Luke Shaw
    2
    1
    3.50

    Luke Shaw

Quite a talent on this evidence. Kept his defensive discipline well to ensure Oscar had a quiet night, and his lung-bursting run and cross from the left enabled Puncheon to level the scores superbly.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin
    1
    1
    3.00

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Unfussy and intelligent on the ball, and pressured Chelsea's midfielders when off it. A less spectacular figure in the Southampton comeback, but a key one.

  • Steven Davis
    1
    1
    2.00

    Steven Davis

Was out-passed by Chelsea's midfielders and replaced by Chaplow with just over 20 minutes left.

  • Jack Cork
    1
    1
    2.50

    Jack Cork

Did ok against his former club, playing solidly in midfield, if a little too safely at times.

  • Guilherme Do Prado
    1
    2
    2.50

    Guilherme Do Prado

Occupied Azpilicueta with his skill, but his delivery was poor and he left Shaw a little too exposed defensively.

  • Jason Puncheon
    3

    4.00

Jason Puncheon Top of the Match

A threat all evening, rarely giving the ball away and helping his side build sustained periods of pressure. Defended his flank well, and couldn't have taken his goal any more emphatically.

  • Jay Rodriguez
    2
    1
    2.50

    Jay Rodriguez

Ploughed a lone furrow up front well in the first half, showcasing good touches and awareness to find his teammates, but couldn't fashion a clear chance for himself.

Substitutions

  • G. Ramírez

    G. Ramírez

Replaced Do Prado with just over 15 minutes left and instantly presented more of a threat.

  • Richard Chaplow

    Richard Chaplow

Played the last 25 minutes with energy and discipline.

  • Rickie Lambert

    Rickie Lambert

Brought on to get his side back into the game and did just that, powering a brilliant header past Cech to give Southampton hope.
