Player Ratings: Spain 0-1 Honduras

Two Group D defeats mean La Roja crash out of the London 2012 Olympics, with Jerry Bengtson sealing their exit with a superb headed goal in the first 10 minutes

    David de Gea

He was not really to blame for the Honduras goal. Confident punching with corners and two top reaction-saves in the first half from the Manchester United goalkeeper kept Spain in the game. Had a lot less to do in the second half.

  • Álvaro Domínguez

    Álvaro Domínguez

Essential block on Mario Martinez’s cross after 21 minutes from the left, the Spanish centre-back had an otherwise average game.

  • Jordi Alba

    Jordi Alba

His height impeded his ability to defend Jerry Bengtson leaping over him to score Honduras’ opener in the first ten minutes, but he should not be marking such a strong aerial presence. The Barcelona man did not charge up the full-back channel as much as he did in many Euro 2012 fixtures.

  • Montoya

    Montoya

Booked for a heavy swipe on Roger Espinoza that meant the Honduran required medical attention. In attack, he caused problems for the opposition defence with his penetrating runs down the full-back channel.

  • Botía

    2.50

    Botía

Tackled well at first but lucky not to be called for a few rough tugs and pushes in set pieces. Like the rest of Spain’s defence, the centre-back had very little to do in the latter 45 minutes.

  • Javi Martínez

    Javi Martínez

The reported Arsenal target hassled and harried well in the centre of the park but was hardly a star on the evening. He sat very deep and impacted little on attacks. Brought off with seven minutes left.

Anonymous all first half, a few shared by Spain coach Luis Milla who hauled the Atletico Madrid midfielder off for Ander Herrera at half-time.

  • Isco

    Isco

Did not have a very good game and struggled to mark his authority in midfield all match. Brought off on 67 minutes for forward Rodrigo.

  • Adrián

    Adrián

His first effort was a tame chip that was guided straight into the chest of the Honduran goalkeeper. He missed two efforts in the second half - one clipped off the crossbar, the other was straight at the keeper - as his movement improved. Unlucky not to be given a penalty when fouled inside the box late on. Saw numerous shots dribble wide or be saved.

  • Muniain

    3.50

    Muniain

Looked confident with the ball at his feet and running at goal, but did not get the opportunity to do this more than a couple of unfruitful times in the first half. In the latter 45 minutes however, the Athletic Bilbao starlet was impressed far more in attack. His finest moment was a powerful dribble that culminated in a wicked shot that was unlucky not to go in off the post.

  • Juan Mata

    Juan Mata

Playing a sort of free role, the Chelsea attacker ran the attack for Spain. He had three golden chances in the first half, one of which was well saved and the other two were desperately unlucky to dribble wide. His rating reflects his profligacy in front of goal despite his sterling work.

    Ander Herrera

Brought into midfield for the final 45 minutes but his affect was limited to passing around the box. A mediocre showing.

  • Rodrigo

    2.50

    Rodrigo

Brought on and was immediately getting himself in the right places at the right time. Unfortunately for the striker he was always hitting the crossbar, hitting the post or seeing his effort saved brilliantly.

  • Tello
    1

    2.50

    Tello

Brought on for final seven minutes. Almost scored two minutes later with a curled effort that skidded inches wide of the left post.

  • J. Mendoza

    J. Mendoza

His decisions were slightly eccentric but, in the first half, every choice went his way - a standing save from an Adrian shot and a leaping punched clearance brought applause from the crowd. In the second half he continued to prowl his box to make sure Spain did not equalise. A heroic goalkeeping performance if ever there was one.

  • W. Crisanto

    W. Crisanto

His most memorable moment was a wild shot after an impressive 40 yard dribble to near the edge of the box which ballooned wide. The left-winger was a menace in the first half but was presumably told to haul back his runs for the second half to defend the 1-0 lead.

  • Maynor Figueroa

    Maynor Figueroa

The Wigan Athletic defender rarely strayed from his left-back position, which was a wise choice considering Spain’s attacking talents. His one attacking moment came within a minute of the second half starting when he fired about a foot over from 45 yards.

  • J. Velásquez

    J. Velásquez

Lucky to get away with a blatant pass-back early in the second half, but overall put in an extremely competent performance at centre-back and commanded the air.

  • J. Leverón

    J. Leverón

The Honduras captain was never awed by the illustrious attackers Spain possessed and deserves heaps of credit for helping to keep the tidal wave of attacks out of the back of the net.

  • A. Peralta

    2.00

    A. Peralta

Marauding, fouled Alba, looked speedy. Extremely harsh booking for tapping the ball away after conceding a free-kick 50-55 yards out. Was outnumbered and outmatched in the second half.

  • Mario Martínez
    1
    1
    1.50

    Mario Martínez

The attacker was relatively ineffective in the first half and caused La Roja fan fury when feigning injury when Spain had the ball only to quickly ‘recover’ when his own side suddenly counter-attacked. Utterly ineffectual in the second half as Honduras struggled to put together attacks.

  • A. Najar

Excellent roaming run was halted when fouled on the left wing midway through first half. The DC United player defended with prowess when required to track back too. An admirable performance from the 19-year-old.

  • R. Espinoza
    3
    1
    3.50

    R. Espinoza

Yellow carded for shirt-pulling on Muniain 45 yards from goal, perhaps harshly. Moments later, assisted the opening goal with an inch-perfect cross for team-mate Jerry Bengtson. Superb header cannoned off the post on 50 minutes.

  • Luis Garrido

    Luis Garrido

His lightning fast feet brought ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaahs’ in the first half but his passing accuracy was slightly off. Yellow carded for a rough tackle in the second half and was one of the players who suffered from La Roja’s utter barrage in the final 45 minutes.

  • J. Bengtson

    1

    J. Bengtson

Leaped over Alba to power in the opening goal, perfectly placed header into the bottom left-hand corner. Did little else all game but ensured if Honduras hoofed it clear that there was a target man available up front. Brought off with 10 minutes left.

The midfielder spent the entirety of his substitute performance helping out in defence.

    A. Lozano

His only impact was winning a free-kick just before stoppage time. Not enough of an impact to be given a rating.
