Monterrey 2-0 Santos Laguna: Humberto Suazo gives Monterrey the advantage in the CCL final first leg

Humberto Suzao's brace handed Monterrey a two-goal cushion headed toward the CCL second leg as the Rayados look to repeat as CONCACAF champions.

Monterrey stamped an early advantage on the CONCACAF Champions League final thanks to a 2-0 home win over Santos Laguna. Humberto Suazo scored both in the second half, after picking up a booking which will rule him out of the second leg.

The first half ended scoreless. The best chances were a Suazo free kick blasted straight at Oswaldo Sanchez and a Darwin Quintero breakaway that he ill-advisedly tried to square rather than shoot. Herculez Gomez, making his first appearance since the CCL semifinal win over Toronto FC, eagerly snatched at any half-chance, but never stressed Rayados goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco.

Towering Santos defender Felipe Baloy also picked up a yellow, meaning he'll miss the second leg as well.

Early in the second half, Humberto Suazo lunged studs-first into Sanchez, but somehow avoided a second caution. The Chilean made Santos rue that lax decision a few minute later. Aldo de Nigris cut in from the right and pulled the ball back to the top of the box, where Suazo finished with some aplomb.

Perhaps eager to influence the tie as much as possible while still able, Suazo added a glorious second as full time approached. The 30-year-old barreled through the entire Santos defense and slotted between Sanchez's legs to cap a brilliant individual run and overall performance.

The second leg will be played at Torreon, where Santos has scored 12 goals in the last two CCL games, on April 26.
