The Portland Timbers salvaged a 1-1 draw with D.C. United in Saturday MLS action.
Since Dwayne De Rosario went down injured, D.C. has scrapped wins, claiming the last three in a row by one-goal margins. The grittiness continued, with the lead coming from a penalty. Perry Kitchen's cross brushed the arm of David Horst and, after a pause, the referee awarded a spot kick.
"Let's be real ... NFL replacement refs have nothing on MLS primary refs. Sick of this garbage," Timbers owner Merritt Paulson tweeted. "I will happily take the fine. It's atrocious."
Chris Pontius, wearing the captain's armband, drilled past Joe Bendik for his 12th goal of the season.
Bright Dike equalized in the 79th minute. Steven Smith, on the overlap, one-timed a low cross into the box. Andy Najar slid to intercept, but Dike pounced on the loose ball and sliced it into the top of the goal from an acute angle.
