    Iraizoz

Did not fall for Ronaldo's attempt at a cheeky penalty and kept his nerve to make the save. Was not given great protection by his defense and he could not do much to prevent the goals. Pulled off a couple of decent saves from a Callejon strike from the right and a long range Ronaldo shot.

  • Jon Aurtenetxe Borde

    Jon Aurtenetxe Borde

Displayed a cool head on a number of occasions when he found himself under intense pressure from the Madrid attackers. Most of the away side's positive play went down the opposite flank so he can be proud of a decent, solid performance.

  • Mikel San José Domínguez

    Mikel San José Domínguez

Picked up a very silly booking in the first half when he cynically raked his studs down the heel of Ronaldo. Found himself on the back foot whenever dealing with Madrid counterattacks and a couple more rash challenges resulted in him being withdrawn at halftime, in fear of him getting sent off.

  • Borja Ekiza

    Borja Ekiza

Did not have the best of games at fullback. Completely lost track of the run of Ozil for Madrid's second goal and this was not the only time it happened. Positioning was very poor at times as Ronaldo was allowed to drift in unopposed from the left time and time again.

  • Susaeta

    Susaeta

His trickery down the right caused Coentrao real problems and he got the better of the Portuguese on a number of occasions. This died off in the second half as Madrid bossed the play and he barely got a sniff as Athletic attempted in vain to grab a goal back.

  • Íñigo Pérez

    Íñigo Pérez

Tested Casillas with a powerful free kick that looked destined for the top corner but was well saved by the Madrid goalkeeper. This was his only real moment of quality in the match, as he did not put in enough tackles in midfield and his possession play was not good enough.

  • Javi Martínez

Javi Martínez Flop of the Match

Determined in his tackling but his positioning was suspect at times. Was slightly unlucky to be penalized for a handball in the box in the opening minutes but he ran the risk by raising his arms, which earned him a yellow. Earned another booking for another very harshly given handball, which saw him see red.

  • Óscar De Marcos

    Óscar De Marcos

Buzzed around in the final third and was always coming inside to try and affect the play, but found himself outnumbered. Nearly scored a screamer when he hit a rocket of a shot towards the top corner only for it to just clip the top of the bar. Should have presented Llorente with more service.

  • Ibai Gómez

    3.50

    Ibai Gómez

Found himself lost in the center of midfield. Spent much of his match attempting to press Khedira and Alonso but he could not do much to negate their effect on the play. Passing play was relatively non-existent as he barely saw any possession to spread the ball across the park.

  • Toquero
    3
    0
    3.00

    Toquero

Was a pest to the Real Madrid defenders and covered every blade of grass in the opposition half. Gave Coentrao a hard time down the right and put some decent deliveries into the box from wide areas. When it came to crunch time in and around the penalty area, however, he lacked the quality to hurt Madrid.

  • Fernando Llorente Torres
    2

    2.50

    Fernando Llorente Torres

Was fairly isolated between the Madrid center backs in the first half but when he came deep his link up play was solid as he always looked to introduce teammates into attacks. In the second half, though, he barely touched the ball and was mostly a passenger.

Substitutions

    Andoni Iraola

Stepped in at center back at halftime in place of San Jose and although he showed a cooler head than his predecessor, he did not fair much better at stopping the onslaught of Madrid.

  • Iker Casillas

    3.50

    Iker Casillas

Pulled off a fantastic save to deny Inigo Perez's free kick towards the top corner, a good stop at a vital time in the match. Was dominant in the air and commanded his area magnificently, continually catching and clearing incoming balls.

  • Pepe

    3.50

    Pepe

As his defensive partner dealt with the attacking threat of Llorente, the Portuguese was eager to join in with the attacking play, and did so with gusto. Burst out of defense numerous times and made some great interceptions which launched counterattacks for Madrid.

  • Sergio Ramos
    22

    Sergio Ramos

Did not give Fernando Llorente a sniff all night as the Athletic striker was out muscled and out-thought all match. Put in some cracking challenges at the edge of the box and arguably should have got on the scoresheet when he missed a golden chance to grab a goal at the back post.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    3
    3.00

    Fabio Coentrao

Struggled to keep Susaeta and Toquero at bay when the Athletic men drifted out to the right and showed signs of real frustration throughout the match, summed up by a rash challenge on the edge of the area which earned him a booking.

  • Arbeloa
    9
    2
    2.50

    Arbeloa

De Marcos often drifted inside from the left so he did not have too much to deal with defensively, which made his poor attacking play all the more disappointing. Continually broke down potential counterattacks with poorly placed passes. Cynically brought down De Marcos when the Athletic man looked to be running through on goal.

  • Sami Khedira

    Sami Khedira

Was lucky not to give away a penalty in the first half when he handled in the area but did not let this affect his game. Typically split up Athletic counterattacks and gave his defense solid protection next to Alonso, putting in numerous good tackles.

  • Mesut Özil

Mesut Özil Top of the Match

Latched on to a fantastic ball along the six yard box from Ronaldo to coolly finish into the corner for his goal. In typical Ozil fashion, dropped into the hole and continually picked out incisive passes in the final third. As always, linked up terrifically with his attacking teammates.

  • Xabi Alonso

    Xabi Alonso

Picked out Ronaldo with a brilliant pass with the outside of his foot down the right which lead to the second goal. Whipped in a fantastic corner for Ronaldo's header and completely ran the game from midfield, launching numerous counterattacks.

  • Callejón
    12

    2.50

    Callejón

Found himself through on goal in the second half but a poor touch scuppered his opportunity to get a good shot on goal. Showed some nice touches in the final third bit his performance lacked any dangerous dribbles or shots.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    33

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Tried to be far too deliberate with his early penalty that was saved by Iraizoz, but made up for it minutes later when he picked out Ozil with an incredible pass to the back post for the German's goal. Grabbed an early second half goal with a towering header which proved to be the killer blow for Athletic.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Got the ball rolling for Real Madrid with an unstoppable strike from the edge of the box into the top corner. Drifted in and out of the match as the game went on but his movement in and around the penalty area was always a danger for the Athletic defenders.

Did not really have any great chances on goal or sniffs of an opportunity after his introduction.
