Everton was denied a deserved away win at Molineux as a Nikica Jelavic first half strike was wrongly ruled out by the assistant referee in what was otherwise an uneventful 0-0 draw with Wolves.

The Toffees dominated most of the game and felt wrongly aggrieved by the disallowed goal, with Jelavic being released by Steven Pienaar and finishing well past Dorus De Vries. Wolves struggled to create any real openings but Richard Stearman should have done better with a close range effort in the opening minutes of the second half.

Tim Cahill had the first opportunity in the fifth minute. The Australian getting the ball from a Marouane Fellaini flick on but his shot lacked power and failed to test Dorus De Vries despite being in an unmarked position at the back post.

James McFadden had the game’s second opening after a long ball out of defense was flicked on by Fellainito Jelavic. The Croat touched the ball into the path of the Scot but he pulled his right foot shot well wide of goal.

Wolves’ first sight of goal came in the 26th minute from a set piece following a foul by John Heitinga on Kevin Soyle. Stephen Hunt took the free kick and found Christophe Berra at the back post, the defender rose above Sylvain Distin but was unable to keep his header down.

Two minutes later the deadlock should have been broken but the assistant referee’s flag ruled out a perfectly good strike from Jelavic. The Croat was released behind the Wolves defense by Steven Pienaar and the striker calmly fired past De Vries in the Wolves goal, however the strike was ruled out for offside despite both Ronald Zubar and Stearman playing the striker onside.

Two minutes after the break Wolves should have scored but the opportunity fell to Stearman when the home side really needed a striker on the end of it. A free kick from Hunt found Fletcher unmarked on the right of the penalty area, he fired a header across goal towards Stearman at the back post but his attempt cleared the danger rather than test Tim Howard.

Moments later Everton also missed a gilt edged opportunity from inside the Wolves penalty area, Hibbert found himself in plenty of room on the right hand side and delivered a perfect cross onto the head of Fellaini but the Belgian headed over.

In the 72nd minute Jelavic was presented with his best chance of the game as a header out of defense beat all the Wolves players and released the Croat. He raced towards goal but dragged his shot wide of De Vries’ far post from the edge of the penalty area.

Two minutes later the Toffees had the ball in the net only for the assistant referee’s flag to rule out substitute Denis Stracqualursi’s scrambled effort. Jelavic broke through the Wolves defense on the left and clipped a cross into the middle where an offside Fellaini missed the ball. Substitute Stracqualursi scrambled the ball in the back of the net only for the flag to deny him due to Fellaini's earlier involvement.
