International Friendly Preview: Slovenia - Canada

Tuesday presents the last chance for Canada to grab a win in 2013. Benito Floro's side faces a 30th ranked Slovenian team looking to prepare for Euro 2016 qualifying.

One more chance.

That's all Canada has left to get a victory this year after going winless throughout the rest of 2013. The poor results have coincided with a months-long scoreless streak that is unthinkable even for an historically goal-challenged side like Canada.

The Canadians have just 90 minutes to try to reverse a lot of that negativity, but the task will be extremely tough against a Slovenian side that will also be looking to end 2013 on a high note.

Slovenia, ranked 30th in the world, missed out on next year's World Cup by virtue of finishing third in UEFA's qualification Group E. It will presumably turn its focus on the next big competition, Euro 2016, and could use Tuesday's friendly against Canada as early preparation.

Like the Czech Republic last week, Slovenia heads into its match against Canada as the heavily favoured home side. Even with the disparity in current form, things might be a bit easier for the Europeans as Canadian head coach Benito Floro has declared he will use the lesser lights on his roster after going with his favoured players against the Czechs.

That means the likes of Karl Ouimette and Stefan Cebara could start alongside veterans Kenny Stamatopoulos and Issey Nakajima-Farran. A couple of players who will definitely not see any time against Slovenia are Simeon Jackson and Caleb Clarke, both of whom played a small part against the Czechs. Jackson and Clarke have left the Canadian camp because of injury.

Whomever Floro puts on the field Tuesday, the pressure will be on to at least find a goal. Canada has failed to score since a loss to Japan back in February, and the team last won a match in Oct. 2012.
