RAMIRO CORRALES SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MLS 08252012

Seventeen and a half years after starting his MLS career, Ramiro Corrales ended it Saturday by captaining his San Jose Earthquakes to victory.

Walter Martinez and Chris Wondolowski scored for San Jose as it defeated FC Dallas 2-1 at Buck Shaw Stadium. But the day belonged to Corrales, the last MLS player to have taken part in the inaugural 1996 campaign. When Corrales was substituted in the 71st minute, teammates Steven Lenhart and Victor Bernardez heaved the veteran onto their shoulders and carried him off the field.

San Jose went ahead in the 27th minute. As Martinez hit a low service toward the near post, Lenhart collided with Dallas' Walker Zimmerman, allowing the ball to apparently roll past them untouched and find the back of the net.

The Earthquakes doubled their advantage in the 57th minute. After Shea Salinas made a darting run into the box but lost possession, Lenhart touched the loose ball to Wondolowski, who fired a rising shot past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz.

The visitors, who fell in Schellas Hyndman's last match as coach, cut the deficit in the 90th minute when Stephen Keel nodded home a Blas Perez cross.

Dallas was mathematically eliminated from the postseason chase earlier this month, while San Jose needed an implausible 13-goal performance to keep its playoff hopes alive.
