Real Salt Lake beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 thanks to Alvaro Saborio's double.
With 20 minutes left in the match, Salt Lake struck. On a quick counterattack, Joao Plata looped a ball over the top. Saborio raced onto it and drilled a hard low shot with his laces that nestled into the corner of the net.
San Jose only directed two of its 14 shots on target. RSL punished the host with five minutes remaining in the match. Kyle Beckerman, making his 300th career appearance, stabbed the ball forward with the outside of his boot. Saborio fluidly trapped and slipped the ball past Jon Busch for the dagger.
"My main focus was really if we could out-compete a team that is known to be one of the best competitors in the league," RSL coach Jason Kreis said. "I thought our guys found ways to weather some storms because San Jose is very dangerous for 10-15 minute periods."
The clean sheet was Nick Rimando's 100th.
