The world's most passionate supporters
Perhaps the best indicator of a fan base's passion is shown in how uncomfortable they make it for visiting teams. And without fail, players from across Europe name Turkish stadiums as the most intimidating. Sitting at the top of this hostile pile is Galatasaray. They were at their most intense in 1993 when they gave visiting Manchester United the infamous "Welcome to Hell" treatment. From the very second they arrived at the airport, the United fans were hunted and hounded by the intimidating Turkish supporters. It continued on to the pitch, with Gary Neville describing the sound created by the fans as "just the most incredible noise I've ever experienced in my life". However, records show the Galatasaray fans could be even louder, as they hold the Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium. On March 18, 2011 at their home ground, the supporters clocked 131.76 decibels, which sits not only above the recognised comfort threshold, but tops the pain threshold too. Just to put that into greater perspective, that is louder than a jet plane taking off.
