Born and raised in a Rio de Janeiro suburb, the Brazilian began with nothing but go on to take it all.
After beginning his career with prolific spells with Vasco da Gama in Brazil, then PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Romario headed to Spain to join the mighty Barcelona.
He would score a staggering 30 league goals at for the Catalan club in 1993-94 and go on to hit almost 1,000 across his astonishing career.
Five of them arrived in USA in 1994 as fired Brazil to the World Cup title, taking the golden ball as the competition’s best player.
And later that year he would be officially recognised by as the greatest on the planet – becoming the first Brazilian to be named World Player of the Year.
The great Johann Cruyff labelled the little man “the greatest player I have coached.”
While former France international Thierry Henry insists Romario “reinvented the centre-forward position.
His glittering career was recognised around the globe as he was twice named in the top two players in world football.
