Wellington Phoenix respond to Michael Essien report

Mark Rudan's side have been linked to the former Chelsea star

Wellington Phoenix have been quick to pour cold water over reports they're in discussions to sign Michael Essien.

The former Chelsea midfielder is currently a free agent with Fox Sports reporting that his representatives have been in touch with Wellington about a potential deal.

While an attractive prospect for a club struggling for crowds, Wellington's general manager David Dome was quick to rule out a move for Essien.

Essien, 35, was most recently playing for Indonesian side Persib Bandung where he scored five goals across 29 appearances.

The Ghanian international spent most of his club career at Chelsea, but has also had short stints with Real Madrid, AC Milan and Panathinaikos.

New Wellington coach Mark Rudan has had a busy off-season to date bringing in a number of players including former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor - Essien however, doesn't appear to be on his radar.
