Usain Bolt worth the gamble for the Mariners, says Ljubo Milicevic

Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt is set to trial with A-League side Central Coast Mariners and former Socceroo Ljubo Milicevic believes he's worth giving a shot.

Bolt retired from athletics last year and has since been training with clubs in Europe as he eyes off a potential football career.

While doubts surround his ability on the football pitch, the Mariners are willing to give him a chance to impress with Milicevic adamant it's exactly what the club needs.

"In terms of marketing the Mariners need all the help they can get - as far as players go, they need all the help they can get," Milicevic told Goal.

"If he’s good enough why not? Who’s to say he can or can’t play.

"If he proves himself adaptable to the Australian game and is going to be an asset on the field first of all for the Mariners, then off the field it would be amazing.

"You’ve got the world’s greatest ever field and track athlete prepared to play football in your country.

"I don’t know if he’s good enough as a player but if people at Dortmund and Norway are saying he’s a decent player and can learn then it’s up to the Mariners to decide quickly if he can make it."

After finishing with the wooden spoon last season, the Mariners are desperate to turn a poor few seasons around and have appointed Mike Mulvey as their new coach.

Milicevic adamant something has to change for the side after a dire recent run.

"In any other league in the world they would have been relegated three divisions below by now," he said.

"I doubt anyone's quick to flick on the channel to the A-League when the Central Coast are playing in recent years."
