Tim Cahill Australia

Socceroos 'saviour' Tim Cahill world's best in last minute, says Craig Johnston

Former Liverpool midfielder Craig Johnston has heaped big praise upon Socceroos veteran Tim Cahill declaring there is no-one better in football in the last moments of a game than him.

Johnston, who was born to Australian parents but opted to represent England at national level, believes Cahill has been saving Australia for a number of years and can contribute on and off the pitch in Russia.

Despite a lack of minutes at club level this season, a 38-year-old Cahill is poised for his fourth World Cup and is a player the Socceroos desperately need according to Johnston.

"He's been the saviour of the Socceroos for three World Cups," Johnston told Omnisport

"So you talk about someone that's a real special personality- there's the playing side with the acts of genius he's come up with to again save Australia has been amazing, but he's a particular character.

"He gets things out of people and teammates and he's done it for a long, long time.

"So I think (Bert) van Marwijk knows what he's doing by putting him in the squad, even if he's not playing.

"But bring him on in the last minute for an overhead scissors kick or far post header, there's no-one better in the world than Timmy Cahill."

Having scored Australia's first World Cup goal in 2006 against Japan, Cahill will become the fourth player in history to score in four consecutive World Cups should he strike in Russia.

As it stands only Pele, Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose have achieved such a feat.
