Lagardere contract headlines agenda at Caf's extraordinary general assembly

Caf are expected to give an update on their commercial partnership with French media firm Lagardere Sports at the extraordinary congress scheduled for the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El Sheikh on September 30.

The 12-year media and marketing deal signed between Caf and Lagardere in 2015 is one of the contentious issues that has dominated headlines in African football.

The contract, entered into during the previous Caf regime led by Issa Hayatou, is worth $1 billion and saw Lagardere securing media and marketing rights for all Caf tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and Champions League.

When current Caf president Ahmed was elected into power last year, he promised to review the deal.

But the possibility of running into a legal minefield has seen Caf adopt a cautious approach in dealing with the contract.

Now listed on the agenda of the extraordinary congress, an update on the Caf-Lagardere deal is much-anticipated.

Another item of interest on the agenda is the election of the African representative to the Fifa Council for the Anglophone linguistic grouping.

South Africa Football Association president Danny Jordaan is favourite to take this post as he faces a challenge from his Malawian counterpart Walter Nyamilandu and Seychelles’ Elvis Chetty.

Although not on the agenda, much focus would also be on how Caf will conclusively deal with the status of Cameroon’s 2019 Afcon hosting rights, an issue that is however a prerogative of the executive committee.

The executive committee will tackle the matter outside congress as allowed by Caf statutes, although it might bring it before the assembly for suggestions or announcement.

Caf president Ahmad has stressed that the final position on Cameroon would be spelt out in Sham El Sheikh.

Cameroon’s preparedness to host the 2019 Afcon has seen Caf issuing conflicting statements in the run-up to this gathering, throwing into doubt Cameroon’s hosting of the tournament.
