Betting expert Paul Gough expects the Manchester clubs to kick of their Champions League campaigns with wins.
City's failure to get past the group stages in each of the last two seasons was one of the main factors in the sacking of former manager Roberto Mancini despite City famously ending their 44-year wait for the title by winning the 2011-12 EPL title.
Now under new manager Manuel Pellegrini, big-spending City have made a shaky start to the new campaign already losing on the road to Cardiff and drawing 0-0 on the weekend against Stoke.
However that has not stopped the bookies from putting City up as the $1.61 favourites to win on the road on Tuesday night - in the opening round of matches in this season's group stage - against Czech minnows Victoria Plzen at $5.50.
Plzen are top of the Czech league but that is well below the standard of the EPL and if City are to progress to the knockout stages of this season's competition, this is simply a must win game.
City are paying the same price to win 2-1 as they are 1-0 - odds of $8 in correct score betting at bet365 - but look good value to score a bigger win at odds of $12 by winning either 3-0 or 3-1.
And in what appears a weak group, City are priced at just $1.14 at bet365 to qualify for the knockout stages this time around - with defending champions Bayern Munich the $1.04 favourites in Group D - while CSKA Moscow are paying $4.50 and Plzen $15.
In the other game in that group on Tuesday night, Bayern should have few problems at $1.18 at home to the Russian club at the massive odds of $16.
However City are only on the equal fifth line of betting at $15 - with local rivals Manchester United - to win the competition overall with Bayern opening as the $4.50 favourites, ahead of Barcelona at $5.50, Real Madrid at $6 and Chelsea at $10.
Manchester United open their campaign as well on Tuesday night and are the $1.16 favourites to progress from Group A, ahead of Ukraine's Shakhtar Donestsk at $2.25, German club Bayer Leverkusen at $2.37 and Spanish club Real Sociedad at $2.50.
United are the $1.72 favourites at bet365 to win at home on Tuesday night against Leverkusen at $4.75 while in the other game Real Sociedad look good value at home at $2.30 to beat Shakhtar at $3.25.
Group B looks distinctly lopsided with Real Madrid at $1.03 and Italian champions Juventus at $1.12 considered certainties to go through at the expense of Turkish side Galatasaray at $5 and FC Copenhagen at $15.
And both are short on Tuesday night with Real paying $1.50 at bet365 to win away against Galatasaray while Juve are even shorter at $1.40 to win away at Copenhagen at $8.50.
In Group C - which also kicks-off on Tuesday night - PSG should win at $2.05 away to Greek side Olympiakos at $3.80 while Benfica are the $1.45 favourites at home to Anderlecht at $7.50.
And big-spending PSG and Benfica are the clear favourites at $1.08 and $1.36 to qualify for the knockout stages from that group at bet365.
