The Reds are not favoured to topple Gamba Osaka at home, but it is they and not their J-League opponents who have anything to play for on Wednesday
Adelaide United can maintain their reputation as Australia's AFC Champions League specialists and book a home match in the Round of 16 with a win away to Japanese side Gamba Osaka on Wednesday.
The Reds, who are already assured of a place in the knockout stages of the competition for the third time after reaching the final in 2008 and the Round of 16 in 2010, are tremendous value to win in Japan at $3.90 at Luxbet.
Gamba Osaka, the 2008 Asian champions, have been the big disappointments of this season's competition and are already no chance of making it out of the group stages, having won just one of five matches so far in Group E.
The Reds, in contrast, sit on top of the group with three wins and a draw from their five games, including a 2-0 win over Gamba in Adelaide in March.
And with Gamba likely to field a weakened side for this clash as they instead turn their attentions to the J-League, John Kosmina's team are well-placed to do the double over Gamba this season.
With K-League side Pohang Steelers just a point behind in second place in the group heading into the final round of matches, Kosmina's team no they cannot afford to slip up if they want to host the Round of 16 clash later this month.
Unlike the European Champions League, which plays two-legged matches throughout the knockout stages, the ACL's Round of 16 is a one-off match, with only the teams that finish top in the eight groups having a home match.
And Adelaide will be assured of finishing top of their group with a win in Japan.

But with plenty of firepower at his disposal through the in-form Bruce Djite and Sergio Van Dijk, Kosmina will be confident his team will at least score in Japan. Their defence will also be strengthened by the return of Iain Fyfe.
And Gamba's home form has been shaky in the ACL, with Pohang having already recorded a 3-0 win in Japan earlier in the campaign.
Incredibly, Adelaide are at odds of $41 at Luxbet to win by the same scoreline and, while it would take a brave person to predict the Reds will win 3-0, they are great value on the correct score betting to win 2-0 at $19 or 2-1 at $12 at Luxbet.
